My understanding is that hyperfixation isn’t autism exclusive, whereas special interest is. For myself, I tend to use “hyperfixation” for an intense interest that is more fleeting, and “special interests” for a long-lasting intense interest. Often a hyperfixation will exist within a special interest. Example: having a special interest and MLP and hyperfixating on a certain ship.
hyperfixation - Essentially it’s being completely immersed in something — whether it be a video game, movie/TV fandom culture or a hobby like crocheting. While typically associated with ADHD and autism, people with mental illness may also experience hyperfixation.
