They never should have been the final villains.

The writers seemed to keep us guessing what the villains would do right until the end. I’m thinking of Twilight’s speech and how they seemed to be listening to her, then the rainbow blast and maybe they’d finally understand, but then came Chrissy’s rant and that was that.

Yeah… Celestia and Luna were quite pissed. All shreds of sympathy they might’ve ever had for them had been atomized by that point.

I’ve seen it argued before that “they should’ve tried to reform them because the Rainbow Magic only took their boosted powers, didn’t petrify them” or something along those lines… which when Chrysalis was snarling words that aren’t dissimilar to what Sombra was taunting them with, and it certainly wasn’t a bluff… (“You think friendship will save you?!” vs “It’s going to take more than a sentimental speech to save you.”) I’m inclined to think they’re a lost cause at that point. And when the other two (Cozy Glow especially, and Tirek) manipulated others with false acts of loyalty before, that’s not a good case in the making in terms of them being redeemable.
 
There really isn’t much, if any, of a meaningful difference between Sombra and Chrysalis in morals, only in their power set and the means. Chrysalis certainly doesn’t have anything against mind control.
 
They couldn’t kill them off unfortunately. They were going down together, and when the group included Cozy Glow… the Sombra treatment just wasn’t happening.

Makes it a bit ironic that many of the “they should reform the Villainous trio” crowd also hate Discord now for that, or try to argue he’s the one that shouldn’t of been reformed. Some even think Discord deserves death, while the trio get no punishment whatsoever, which kinda goes against their, “Everyone deserves a chance” or “no kill” argument.
 
It’s also odd they have no sympathy for Sombra.

It’s possible Discord saved their lives by suggesting petrification. Celestia said they didn’t know of a fitting punishment, they might have decided to blast them like Sombra.

Considering how upset some fans are over them “not reforming,” (and how some fans feel reforming villains is getting overdone) it’s probably best not to kill them off, and leave their fates vague for fans to interpret their own way.
 
Heck, some fans are downright angry they got turned to stone, imagine how angry they’d be if they did die.

“Oh they’re gonna have to glue you back together, IN HELL!”

And nothing of value was lost.

It’s like if back in Season 2 they chose to keep Discord a statue until the end of the series with absolutely no good closure for 7 seasons, they didnt because thats not how you finish a villain, everyone knew he would break free eventually bc you know he’s alive

Terrible edit but I’d honestly prefer them dying permanently than an annoying-ass open ending.

We don’t know anything.
