The worst in G4 came in Season 9, IIRC they had a new animation team (or animation director or something) and completely changed the style. Some people are ambivalent about that, but then some people actually like this new stuff, and in my opinion most people I’ve seen agree that S9 animation was pretty awful at times.  
Pre-S9, extreme facial expressions were only used sparingly, and most of the time weren’t too outrageous. Though in the later seasons you could still hear people complain about “meme faces” becoming more and more frequent.
 
Either way, even in S9 itself, the faces at rest looked normal, and most exaggerated shots only last for 1-2 seconds.
 
This crap is gonna be continuous calarts from start to finish.

I think they’re cute. And dumbing down is a good way to go, as opposed to completely redefining. The new stuff’s gonna be way more lax, and that lets the old stuff remain relevant. But what do I know, i only pitched it.

I just see it as an extra-cartoony style. Very caricature-esque.

I think what drives people crazy about the new style is that the mouth and eyes tend to move OFF of the face entirely (unlike FiM, where the face itself will contort to accommodate the mouth/eyes). It’s something a lot of shows do, but only for momentary super-exaggerated expressions. Pony Life seems to just use this as part of its average animation styling, even just a grin results in a corner of the mouth overlapping the eye.
 
Of course all we’ve seen is promo material, so it’s possible this won’t be the same within the show itself, but I can understand some people not liking it.

It sounds like it’s G4.5. I think it’s supposed to be a placeholder until G5 is ready. Probably only air for one season or so.

So, this is the new gen?? O_O .. confirmed?? or its just for the new toys??
