Was Anubis an ancient Diamond Dog and Baast an ancestor of Abyssynians?

Yes. The jackals are a subspecies of the diamond dogs that can be seen on King Anubis here, he has the characteristic teeth from the underbite on him and larger arms than the legs.

From FiM # 97 we now know that the anugyptian cats had fled to present-day Abyssinia where they later lost their magic. But like the abyssinian cats who have revealed themselves to be magical shapeshifters who with age will get human features like anthropomorphized cats - their internal magic has not disappeared, until this is awakened again.
