Honestly, the fact that it WASN'T personal made him MORE interesting, not less. Villains with personal vendettas against the hero are overplayed and overdone, and it takes away from the menace. It's far cooler AND scarier when the villain haves theis/her own personal goals and the heroe is are just in the way.
To keep with the Marvel comparison, this is what made Thanos so cool: he didn't have a personal grudge against ANY of the Avengers, they were just in the way of his "perfect balance" plan.
The fact that Grogar didn't have a score to settle with the Mane Six made him that much cooler.
