So does he work the night shift and come home every morning? Because if it was morning and the sun was rising, then the sun would crawl down the wall from top to bottom like that. I feel like I’m just missing something really obvious.

Swap your concept of where west and east are in the picture and maybe modify (greatly?) your idea of the height the window in question is at and you probably have it.

…on second point I think you are correct and he must work an unusual shift.

Like a cat, Rarity is waiting for the human to return, yet puts on the facade that says “I don’t really care if he comes back.” Also, would Rainbow be doing something like Pinkie? She is the element of loyalty after all. I would think she would be on top of the door. (I have to analyze to avoid the heart attack from the cuteness this picture is.)
