twilight shouldn’t have called it hopeless magic. there is nothing magical about hopelessness. she should have called it the magic of hope, the only thing with the power to bring color to our lives. it wasn’t magic that made the color disappear. it was the loss of magic.

From what I heard and researched (and read the passport Rainbow Roadtrip book), Hopeless Magic isn’t just caused by despair, but also by being the opposite of who you are as a character. Even The Return of Harmony demonstrated this when Discord corrupted the Mane 6. In Rainbow Roadtrip, the color disappeared because Hope Hollow’s citizens became unfriendly and apathetic, and so their color was drained.
