Well, Polynesia doesn’t have a native equine population as far as I understand, so there isn’t really a good way to depict a native islander in an equine species.
In the end it’s not my call to make, because it’s the commissioner’s OC. Maybe there’s some history about people sailing across the Indian ocean, maybe he just wanted his character to be a stripy boy.
