By that moment it was clear the writers were simply just trying to end the episode. Also it was never clear what that throne was made of nor that Sombra could create exact types of gems or else he could have just created his own version of the Crystal Heart as well, or ever his own elements of Harmony. heck by the logic of simply creating the right crystal Sombra could literally forge his own Tree of Harmony with ease. Such thought would be too stupidly over power so I doubt the writers ever considered such a possibility.

So, writers… Chrysalis suddenly gets anti-magic (her throne) to weaken Discord, but Sombra (who always had the power to make said crystals) suddenly doesn’t?

If this is the case that would be cool. I want to see him return in a future movie / special. A two part episode or comic series is simply not enough to showcase his potential. If you want this to be true, they should at least tease his survival like what they did with his horn in Season 3 and his horn appearing again in Fiendship is Magic #1 and Siege of the Crystal Empire.

As far as I know, only Season 9 had a whiny baby who cried in defeat. The Comics gave us a lovable anti-hero on par with Zuko. The only issues are more on how he was used rather than his design and personality. Overall, Comic Sombra is the more intriguing character.

Again the original Smooze nearly brought about global genocide. Light hearted or not you watch the old eisode you can see every ounce of terror as the main cast watch helpless as millions are killed. It was clear even back then that the writers were never after light heart stuff.
 
I’ll agree that season nine’s take on most of the villains was bad. With two exceptions, that being Chrysalis and Sombra. She was already going over the deep end long before season nine even started. Meanwhile, Sombra was extremely consistent considering the little amount the season three original showed us. Extremely active, very power, thinking several steps ahead and only alive long enough to serve a purpose that writers designed.

Right, right ok. They… had some creepy themes to them. But they were still pastel coloured creatures in a fantasy world. Come on, don’t tell me Crysalis cackling and singing a song at the end of Canterlot wedding inspired terror! Compared to some other children’s cartoon MLP is still pretty squarely on kids show territory. And that’s ok. People came to MLP to watch a light hearted show!

What do you mean “always”? Chrysalis was at her best in Season 2 and it all went downhill from there. Tirek was never goofy when he debuted, he had the audience believe he was unstoppable. Cozy Glow was the manipulative, passive aggressive type not this bumbling goofball we see in season 9.

Tirek rips life out creatures. Sombra can create your darkest fears. Nightmare Moon can trap you in your darkest nightmares. And that just covering G4, go back to G1 and we had a tyrannical Bee, a version of Tirek that could turn ponies into literal monsters, a real Grogar that enslaved nearly every pony at point and nearly murdered the main cast and to top things off, two villains who could be seen in any type of horror movie, Arabus, a killer cloud who could create depression to point of implied suicide and the original Smooze who bring I shit you not global genocide.

Not even close. Being a goofy villain doesn’t mean they couldn’t be dark. What I was referring to was the comics attempts to make good villains from the shows baseline. Most of their best villains were either purely of lesser show villains like Flim and Flam and Iron Will or their own created villains, ie Radiant Hope, that Cow robber whose name always escapes me, the mirror six and the Nightmare spirit.
 
Meanwhile any main villain outside from Chrysalis herself was utter shit. Heck they even ruined the changelings with their origins comics saying they were created from Starswirl’s sneezing in a toxic dump, yes Starswirl sneezing

Well, if the villains were too dark, it would jar heavily with the tone of the show. I mean, for god’s sake, it’s a show centered around pastel horses. They learn lessons about friendship. I gotta say, I did see the Umbrum becoming kind of goofballs at the end. No way they were gonna leave it THAT hardcore.

Yes go rewatch the episodes, he planned for them to be there and fight them, but they decided to be useless. And above all did the one thing no villain has ever done, destroy the Tree of Harmony. Not even Tirek could do that while holding all four alicorn’s power, Discord’s and all the ponies equestria. All while his only purpose was to rebel against the alliance and be killed.
