We don’t know what happened in the time skip. But we do know that everything turned out okay, and that they continue to be friends.

No, it ended badly and you just happen to like it. First off, the ponies have wrinkles, gray hair and stressed eyes. I can tell from looking at them that they’re old and not up for more adventures. Second, the ponies haven’t moved from where we left them. RD was a Wonderbolt and now she is MORE of a Wonderbolt. Rarity had her boutique and now she has MORE boutique. Fluttershy had her animals and now she has MORE animals. AJ had her hat and now she has MORE hoof-me-down clothing. Twilight was a princess and now she is MORE of a princess. Pinkie had nothing, so she got shipped with Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic, an American singer-songwriter, record producer, satirist, actor, voice actor, music video director, comedian, and author. With how the ponies end up is just lazy. Why even have a timeskip if this is what you have to show for us? With how many years has passed, it feels empty. Third, the characters are done, solved, dissected and shelved. They’re all too old for us to learn anything new from them. Too old to have a future. Too old to dream. As it is, nothing changed as time went by and nothing will change as time ends. It was a character driven show, otherwise there wouldn’t be any excuses to not let it continue. Theres no point releasing Tirek, Cozy and Chrys from their torment, because there are no characters for them to interact with. And with the show over they’re as good as dead. You have to remember that Discord was released and ended back in the stone the same 2-parter, and is then permanently free the next season. And he is nearly a God, so time has less relevance to him. There is cruelty to be seen in the stone statues after so much time has been lost and we close the book for good. I don’t really care for characters with no relevance. If they released a story about the Kirin and Donkey, I wouldn’t be interested.
 
I’m not even being negative enough. The bad decisions that went into writing and directing the last season are near endless. I’m currently only talking about how this was the wrong place in time to skip to.

Um, no. It didn’t end in a bad place. You just didn’t like it. First off, we don’t know the ages of the characters. We actually never have. So we don’t know if “a teensy-weensy longer skip” would have resulted in the mane 6 being dead. Second, they clearly HAVE moved forward in their lives. Rainbow Dash is clearly the new captain of the Wonderbolts, replacing Spitfire. Twilight has become the true ruler of Equestria, and has fully adapted to her role as mentor. Pinkie Pie has a DAUGHTER. How is having children NOT moving forward? Third, we still don’t know a lot about the world. There are PLENTY of mysteries to solve. What happened with Klugeltown after the Storm King was defeated? The movie is 100% canon, you know. What happened to Tempest? Where did Celestia and Luna go? Does Cadence still run the Crystal Empire or has Flurry Heart taken over? Will Tirek, Cozy Glow, or Chrysalis ever get out? After all, it’s already been proven that the stone treatment isn’t exactly forever. IS Twilight immortal or does she simply have an extended lifespan like a fantasy elf? When did the Kirin decide to join the rest of Equestria? Hell, they even gave us an entirely new, no-name cast right at the very end for a “new generation” consisting of more than just ponies. You’re being overly negative for the sake of complaining. Claiming they intended on removing any ability for fans to add onto the world or solve unsolved mysteries is a disservice to the people that worked so hard on this series.

MLP:FiM ends in a bad place. The ponies really haven’t moved forward in their lives since we left them and the future offers only death. There isn’t room to imagine what happened during the lost years and the future has nothing to build upon on. It was supposed to give finality to the series, but its a dead end. With shorter skip, there would’ve been a future to imagine. With just a teensy-weensy longer skip, the ponies would’ve been dead and you’d wonder how they lived the rest of their lives. As it currently stands, theres no room to imagine. And that was the intention. To leave no more mysteries or secrets to solve. The series and its characters are solved.

Then again, given the reaction some people had to the finale, I doubt they want those loose ends ‘screwed up’ by the current writers.
