Not really. It’s more like Star Trek Enterprise. Remember how fans originally thought that was AU because the first episode had a modern Klingon? And then everything was explained later.

Nu-Who (since 2005) is “canon” in the normal sense, but I don’t count it as canon, personally, because it’s really nothing like classic Doctor Who, and the tie-in media produced during the hiatus are better overall. Canon is in the eye of the beholder, really. Any viewer has the right to decide “non-canonical Y fits better with the previous canon than canonical X, so X must be a parallel universe” - or somesuch. Admittedly it’s easier when it’s a science fiction franchise which has parallel universes canonically anyway…

Its a visual reboot from the TOS style but the stories take place in prime.

Well, it depends on how you define “canon”. Some argue that “canon” has nothing to do with “continuity” and instead simply means “official”.
 
But many don’t define “canon” this way. For example the Star Wars Expanded Universe (now called “Legends”) is still printed and still official products but the company has stated that they aren’t canon.

Canon does not mean free of plotholes. Plenty of franchises have plotholes. Anyway, I don’t know why anyone brings up Discovery anymore when we have Picard in just a few weeks. The original timeline is alive and well.

nope I point to Star Trek. they say Discovery is canon yet can not fit logically to Prime Canon.
 
So no they may hold the rights but can’t really make canon.

It actually does. It just means that some fans dislike the decisions and create their own idea of canon. Objectively, canon is determined by the current creators.  
Look at Star Wars. Some fans reject the new Trilogy and refuse to acknowledge the status of the EU as legends, het objectively, the new trilogy is canon, will still be developed, while legends has not had any official work done on it in at least 4 years. EU is no longer canon, the sequel trilogy is.  
We have the same thing here, heck, some people refuse to accept Starlight or Alicorn Twilight, but if you just go to the nearest toy store, what do you know, there they are!  
I’m not saying people who reject a IP’s canon are wrong, so long as they are not toxic. The Star Wars fandom unfortunately is. Some parts of our fandom are. But, the spin-off “legends” stories and art fans create are honestly alot of fun.

canon can be a bit sujective. just because a company holds an IP doesn’t mean what they do with it can be canon.

It happened in the film so it is canon to the Films and the Kelven verse. George Taki like Laurn has no creative control as they are no longer part of the creative team.
 
A single person does not overwrite an entire staff and on screen evidence.
