If a comic is not contradicted by the show, it’s canon. End of story. Get over it.

Ten years later, 9 seasons on, after so many many fandom squirmishes… and still, people can’t just discuss what’s canon in their opinion without it devolving into absolute duckery. Image could easily be taken as a joke, calm down, my god.

Topkek, you smartass literally think the Church is a “franchise”. Find me just one reliable source to back up your laughable definition. By the way, anachronistic usage of the term aside, the Bible or the writings of the Fathers aren’t “intellectual property” by any stretch of the imagination, so even your own made-up definition doesn’t apply.

LOL sure, bruh, whatevs.

Meanwhile, three times now BPs have removed the op is a duck tags that were added by a mod, so I don’t seem to be the one all a-tizzy here with my wild and crazy policy platform of “just use the word ‘continuity’ instead”. Once again, the only reason anyone is even arguing about this is because the people who incorrectly use “canon” are super mad that others refuse to hate IDW as much as they do, and want some way to claim that IDW is ~objectively~ inferior. None of this would even be an issue if the haters could be satisfied with simply saying “IDW sucks so I’m going to ignore it since it has no effect on the cartoon’s continuity”, but some people are just completely incapable of accepting that others are allowed to like something they hate.

All that matters is I’m going to continue to enjoy canon FiM comic stories once FiM season 9 ends.

Can’t wait to see how they adapt to the events of the finale.

@TexasUberAlles
Almost as many people watch the comic drama tag as hide it. (15 vs. 22). The IDW drama tag isn’t much different.

LOL you’re gonna have to search awhile to find a definition of “franchise” that doesn’t descriptively apply to The Church as a distributor of intellectual property, “Background Pony #4173”.

Also, up/down ratios don’t really count for much on images a lot of users aren’t going to see in the first place; go check how many people hide tags like comic drama, image macro, op is a duck, and op is trying to start shit.
Background Pony #B6D1
  1. The Bible is not a “franchise”.
  2. The original meaning of a word doesn’t determine its current meaning.
  3. Words can have multiple meanings.
  4. Even conceding your preferred meaning, “canon” is always defined relative to an author or group of authors. When discussing the show, people aren’t usually talking about the “Hasbro canon” at large, but simply the “canon relative to the show creators”, if you want to put it that way. Your attempt at fusing together different incarnations of G4 means that you are only focusing on the “macro-canon”, so to speak, which is something not everyone cares about, as the like/dislike ratio for this image demonstrates.

    That being said, you’re welcome to disagree and go on a new rant. This was enough time wasted on one silly meme.

@Spacefrog
“Canon” when applied to a franchise with multiple authors includes everything which is part of the franchise. That is in fact the original use of the word, since the Bible had, uh, several authors, and the original arguments over canonicity were about whether or not various texts should be considered part of the franchise.

I know, and I completely agree, I just found the fact, that all the dictionaries I could find, are so outdated, entertaining.

Most dictionaries actually use holy texts as one of the definitions, but the word do not apply it to other works if there are more than one author, some actually only mention books, as possible canon.

and keep in mind that the MLP comic was part of the Deviations event, so by your definition of “canon”, MLP exists in the same canon as Transformers, Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Orphan Black, X Files, Star Trek, G.I. Joe, Mars Attacks, Popeye, Judge Dredd, and anything else that is part of the “IDW Universe”.

Probably a bad example since the event
1; Was not a crossover event, so the different comics where kept separate.
2; It was always advertised as an alternate timeline/universe.

I do think most use canon interchangeably with continuity.

The show actually don’t fit the dictionary version of canon since it apparently have to be by the same author.

@Lord You Know Who
No– it is not “my definition”, it is the definition. And you keep falsely claiming to represent “everyone else”, so you apparently don’t know what that means, either, because your incorrect personal definition is absolutely not any kind of consensus.

Canon is the entire collected body of work of a franchise. Period Dot The End Full Stop. It is completely irrelevant that you have a personal definition you came up with because you wanted to exclude [thing you dislike] in a way that lets you pretend anyone who likes [thing] is Objectively Wrong™; your personal definition does not change the actual definition of the word no matter how hard you stamp your foot about it.

And yes, everything that has ever been published with STAR WARS™ trade dress is part of Star Wars canon, the same way that every Batman story DC has ever published– or licensed any other company to publish– is part of Batman canon; being part of a collected body of work has absolutely nothing to do with whether any parts of those body agree with each other or contradict each other. Disney deciding that only a certain group of movies and cartoons represent the real Star Wars and everything else is “B canon” or whatever doesn’t suddenly make the newspaper comic strips or the Dark Horse comics or the Droids cartoon suddenly Not Star Wars, it means they’re different Star Wars continuities that can be ignored or contradicted by the approved group of movies and cartoons and nobody has to bother trying to editorially fit them in.

…Just to be crystal clear here, all of this folderol is because you refuse to simply… use the correct word for two similar-but-not-interchangeable story settings within the same franchise, a word you already admit to knowing.

If we are using your definition of “canon”, then Rogue One AND the novel where it was revealed that the Death Star was sabotaged because Chewbacca took a nasty shit on the restroom are both canon at the same time.

There’s a lot of stuff from IDW that is contradicted by the show…King Sombra’s redemption, Chrysalis’ origin, Storm King’s entire personality, the whole Anon-a-Miss incident… and keep in mind that the MLP comic was part of the Deviations event, so by your definition of “canon”, MLP exists in the same canon as Transformers, Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Orphan Black, X Files, Star Trek, G.I. Joe, Mars Attacks, Popeye, Judge Dredd, and anything else that is part of the “IDW Universe”.

Bottom line: there’s a difference between “canon” as you define it and “canon” as everyone else defines it.

Yeah, no– sorry y’all, doubling down on being quantifiably wrong still doesn’t make you right, no matter how hard you try to distract people from noticing that the only reason you’re refusing to *checks notes* …use a word correctly is because you’re super mad that everyone doesn’t automatically hate whatever IDW story you’re mad about as much as you do.

This whole debate reminds me of the whole “decimate” thing. NO ONE uses “decimate” to mean “remove ten percent of something”. Everyone uses it as a synonym for “devastate”, “exterminate”, “annihilate” or “destroy”.

This is the same thing. Yes, TECHNICALLY, “canon” means “anything made by an official source”, but nobody uses it in that context. Everyone uses it to mean “something that counts as part of the official continuity”.

My point being, you are being overly pedantic, and no one likes someone who is overly pedantic.

@Background Pony #4173
I see your math skills are no better than your language skills, because not only do most people on this site actually know what the word means, at least three quarters of the people who belligerently refuse to use it correctly are clearly and unmistakably doing so because STOP LIKING THING I HATE over some story that got them heinie-harmed from the comics.

@northern haste
When people say Canon they mean that show’s continuity

Maybe they should try to learn what words mean before they use them, then? “Continuity” is sitting right there. It’s the correct word, and anyone who’s ever read a superhero comic already knows exactly what it means and exactly how it applies to the differences between the FIM cartoon and the FIM comics, which makes it really, really obvious what they’re doing when they intentionally walk around it to say “canon” instead.
Background Pony #B6D1
@TexasUberAlles
>Hasbro is literally the only one that decides what is and isn’t canon, because it’s the trademark owner and controls what gets published as part of the MLP media franchise.

That’s obviously not what 99.999% of people, including me, mean by “canon”.
