Depends on how it's done, but some fans act like anything like that, is "fan-service, or nostalgia-pandering, and shouldn't be."
 
I even see some hate on stuff like Super Mario for "nostalgia pandering." It just sounds like an excuse to me.
 
And of course, if series never references a past canon, or something, then fans get mad for that, as well.
