I doubt anyone good is going to die in the finale, especially not on a Y-7 work (Grogar will). But demigoddess status or not, abdicating means relinquishment of all responsibilities that come with the position. If the writers really wanted to drive the point home that the two sisters sought to retire so badly, their magic should’ve been relinquished as well. In fact, it would make Celestia and Luna stronger characters as a result, as it would end their tale in the most meaningful way it can.
