I doubt anyone good is going to die in the finale, especially not on a Y-7 work (Grogar will). But demigoddess status or not, abdicating means relinquishment of all responsibilities that come with the position. If the writers really wanted to drive the point home that the two sisters sought to retire so badly, their magic should’ve been relinquished as well. In fact, it would make Celestia and Luna stronger characters as a result, as it would end their tale in the most meaningful way it can.

In Equestria the magic is a fact of life,is natural in her body that live with them 24 hours a day. No only power.

The show has dealt with far worse implications, like Nightmare Moon’s plan inadvertently killing all life in Equestria, Sombra’s slaves, Sombra disintegrating twice, the horrific fates of the ponies in the alternate timelines, Chrysalis and the changelings planning to consume the mane cast and other important figures, the Mean six having their life force drained out of them, and the ponies who were slaughtered by Grogar’s monsters.

But Celestia and Luna relinquishing their magic to their successor and bidding her farewell is too much for the show? Their magic being linked to their immortality is something we in the older audience infer. It’s one of the implications that may be lost on a much younger audience. But it doesn’t have to be grim. Celestia and Luna losing their immortality can just be another implication we instinctively comprehend, but to younger viewers, they may not even suspect that they’ve lost their immortality. To them, it would seem like two of their beloved characters were going on exciting new adventures and that they’d always live on. Hell, that could even be another excuse for Hasbro to start new toy lines of the Two Sisters.

It reminds me of when one poster said Friendship is Magic was special because anyone could interpret the show however they like. Lyra and Bon Bon for example, to some (and a lot of us here), seem like two mares in a romantic relationship, whereas others, (mostly outside of the community) see them as just two best friends in a platonic relationship. It’s all about one’s perception and the meaning they derive from it.
Background Pony #98D7
I realized why they wouldn’t just transfer all their powers to Twilight, that would risk giving up the part of their magic responsible for their immortality, an issues the show has proven unwilling to tackle.
WindmillOfFriendship

And as for the two sisters, now depowered and mortal, they’d thank Twilight and her friends for everything they’ve done for them. They’d fly off into the sunrise and look forward to their retirement, confident in Twilight’s capabilities in bringing a new era of harmony to Equestria and the rest of the world. This would probably fit more in the series finale if the two sisters play a role in it.

Good points actually. It’s possible it might still happen by the end of the show.

I believe she would’ve been able to raise both the sun and moon with the combined magic of the two sisters, and she’d pull it off seamlessly to emphasize her maturity and wisdom. And yes, that most likely entails a transformation, probably taking aspects of both sisters and blending them into one balanced design (and a new toy idea for Hasbro as well, which makes it all the more surprising they didn’t go through with something like this.)

Again, that’s why it would’ve made far more sense logically in-universe and thematically for Celestia and Luna to bequeath Twilight their magic, most likely regressing back to their original forms. The way Celestia said she and Luna were retiring seemed to imply that were relinquishing their power, that they were tired and wanted to leave Equestria to the one who surpassed them, so why not give Twilight their magic to enable her to raise the sun and moon if Celestia and Luna are so adamant about abdicating with all their duties that come with it? Would having them relinquishing their power push the episode to a G rating, with the implication that they were going to live as mortals?

Plus, we’ve seen how easy it was for the amulet to malfunction. What if it breaks again? Would Luna and Celestia swoop in and fix it like it did before? Doesn’t that diminish the impact of Twilight succeeding her master? What if it gets stolen by some mad mare or another nefarious group? It’s implications like these that make you realize how mishandled the show has become if a cop-out like this was allowed to be green lit.

You think twilight should have gained a magically flowing mane and been able to raise the sun ‘manually’ so to speak?

Well, compared to Cozy Glow and Chrysalis especially, he’s the least developed of the three, unless you consider the comics canon. If anything, he’s just a relic from early seasons where the villains were massive evil one-man armies. He hasn’t even brought up Scorpan in any capacity since his debut, not even when bringing up where to find knowledge to use the bell.

If anything, Chrysalis was the best part of the episode. Although, she and her co-conspirators are presented as equals, she’s the ringleader of the group, consciously or not. She’s the one who keeps her partners in check when they have their epiphany about friendship, proposes to backstab Grogar, and concocts the scheme to create the massive distraction when Tirek was out of ideas. And even at the end of episode she reminds her party of their true goal and not to get sidetracked on superficial personal desires. Without her, Cozy Glow and Tirek would be lost, but she’s the linchpin that keeps them together. She’s a main antagonist in all but name, forming a de-facto big bad ensemble with Grogar.

I am actually glad that for what it seems they keep their powers. I don’t want to see them as normal ponies. It would take the “demigoddess” status, one of their most mysterious features, and throw it all away. I still scared they are going to make them disappear infinity war style (maybe with glitter) or loose their tall and gorgeous figure. UUUgh I hope the final doesn’t disappoint me. ;;
WindmillOfFriendship

@ChildOfTheNight
This scene would’ve had far more impact if Luna and Celestia bequeathed their magic unto Twilight - as a sign of passing down the torch, ending with Twilight flying skywards and raising the sun herself the exact same way Celestia did in Sonic Rainboom, to emphasize the fact that she’s grown so far over the years that the student has become the master. Not only that, but Twilight’s magical empowerment would’ve added intrigue to the finale, since she’s not just in charge of Equestria, she also has the immense power of the Two sisters. How that would’ve factored into the Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy’s plan, as well as whatever Grogar has in store would’ve set the stage for what’s to come. And it would’ve also been another parallel to Grogar in regards to his seeking to restore his former power.

The staff’s apathy and lack of hindsight disposed of what could’ve been one of the most heartfelt and meaningful moments in the entire series, and probably one of the last. This is what I mean by the show lacking a sense of direction. Now, there may be a chance that we’ll get that moment in the finale, but considering the overall quality of the season, I’m keeping my expectations low.

At least there’s a great idea for a cool art piece.
