So the Princesses made this machine so their subjects could raise and lower the sun themselves and no longer be reliant on them? That’s great! Kind of reminds me of that Greek titan who gave mankind fire.
 
A great ruler should do everything possible to give their people more power and independence.

The mane 6 have plenty of responsibilities.  
Celestia has seemingly been a great leader if Equestria has thrived for a millennium under her rule.  
Luna is finally back and getting the appreciation she always wanted.
 
This is the school all over again, the writers have to figure out a new direction/challenge for the Mane 6 once more and it feels so very forced and poorly written.

Start of Season 9: We will tranfer our powers to the Mane 6 to let them rule
 
A few episodes (and ciders) later: LOL, JK! YOU JUST GET A BUCKING AMULET TO DO ALL THE WORK! ENJOY NOT BEING ALICORNS WHILE WE KEEP OUR POWERS AND PARTY!

Sounds about right. I only have one major story gripe prior to S8.  
Quite a few after.  
I can enjoy most of the episodes but the overall writing and plot decisions are just so uuuuuugh.

Let’s all just accept this fact: MLP has been on the decline for a while and Season 9 is going to end with a fizzle

I was referring to Faust’s statement that The Night that Lasts Forever would’ve killed all plant life and eventually all other life that depends on it. This wasn’t the case in the Cutie Remark, if the placement of the timelines are anything to go by, but that can be attributed to the new staff at the time ignoring the show bible, and the implications from previous events that were set up early on. What? Is moonlight a suitable for growing plants? Doesn’t that diminish the stakes that were built up in the pilot? (At least Nightmare Moon’s timeline seemed to make the most sense, the others were just extreme cases of Josh Haber’s insane troll logic because he didn’t understand the Butterfly Effect.) But I digress.
 
The nature of the show as a toy advertisement has been it’s greatest strength in enabling the staff to create its massive intricate world, and all the lovable characters that exist within. However, it was also its greatest weakness because of the strict guidelines and ever-changing staff. To be honest, I fully agree with you that the magical bequeathing isn’t something that’s going to happen in the show, even though Celestia and Luna would no longer have any fucking reason in-universe and thematically to keep their powers into retirement. If anything, they’ll do something similar to Rainbow Power. After, or perhaps during Grogar’s defeat, Twilight will receive a permanent powerful form that surpasses Grogar’s power, perhaps using the friendship of everycreature in the world. I doubt the finale would even pull that off in good taste.
 
Maybe in the event that international copyright law is somehow rendered null and void, legally or practically, some other studio will make a sequel to the show that would be more adventure-focused and aimed at older audiences with mature themes and moments, but one can only hope.
