Lunar Supporter - Helped forge New Lunar Republic's freedom in the face of the Solar Empire's oppressive tyrannical regime (April Fools 2023).

Season 6 was the true start of the decline (someone decided it should be “Starlight Glimmer and Friends”) but there were still quite a few Gems.
Season 7 was Season 6 part 2. Slightly worse. Less focus on the Mane 6. More Starlight.

Sorry, but that is complete bullshit. Starlight only appeared in 7 episodes in season 6. In season 7 she only appeared in 9 episodes. She didn’t even appear in half of the epsiodes of either season, so I fail to see where this “the show became the Starlight Glimmer show after season five” bullshit is coming from.

@Softy
I agree 100% with all of that. I felt the show had its peak at Season 6, and started to go down in Season 7, with a few pretty good episodes, but WAY too much focus on Starlight. I mean, I was fine with her being part of the team, but she started to replace Twilight in Season 7. I also agree 100% with your opinion on Season 8.

Bullshit. She didn’t appear that often in seasons 6 and 7.

I believe that there are a lot of people that felt season 3 was lacking that aren’t Faust fans, to me it seemed to signify the gradual downturn of the show, but you also have to keep in mind as well that around that time people were beginning to “out-grow” the show. Kids were getting older and losing intrests while other fans were moving onto other things. And as I’ve mentioned before just about every long running show has met the same fate so my point is that this has all happened before, it’s really nothing new.

@TheRocketMan
I thought we discussed this like a year ago? I’ve discussed my criticisms on Faust in the past in other conversations. In the last post I said the show gradually got worse due to writer burnout, not because Faust left the show. I’m not saying the show isn’t watchcable anymore, but the later seasons (as a whole) could have been better. But at the same time I think fan expectations were also to blame as well. I’m not trying to put blame on either the writers or the fanbase. It’s just that hype and excitement for a show tends to fade over time. It’s happened to a lot of shows over the years. Shows like Dexter (the Showtime series), Supernatural, The Simpsons, Family Guy, ect. They start out strong and then inadvertently “jump the shark” and then fall into this cycle of repition and predictability.

I myself still enjoy the characters and the show as a whole, but I wont deny that it has it’s flaws.

Like I mentioned before, writer burnout. I dont think the show staff were passionate about the show anymore, I think they were all wanting to move onto their next projects. It’s like being a Manga writer, those guys are putting out arcs every week. So you figure on what kind of mental strain is put on those people. The same thing could be said here, it was like everyone was tired of working on the show but they had to finish the season before they could move on. Thus the writing had gotten worse and the characters slowly became one-dimensional versions of their selves. There are still some good episodes in each season but the series as a whole just became dull. Like they just kept using the same rehashed stories over and over, just because they felt it was easier to do that than try something new. Shoving a musical number in every episode just to move the story along is lazy. Coming up with a complex awnser for a simple problem does not make one look smart it makes one look like anarrogant ass-hole. And constantly using pop culture refferences to grab ones attention is just a gimmick (a little bit here and there is fine, but to the point where it screams “buy our merch!!!!”

Now alot of people are going to disagree with me here and thats fine. But Pony Life in my opnion accomplishes on what it’s trying to be; a wacky and silly cartoon with wacky and silly characters. Because it sets out on what it is.. a cartoon. It doesn’t try be like FIM because it is it’s own entity.

Well, you could read episode plot summaries at the wiki, which would take less time and investment.

I already did that as well as reading/watching various reviews. Frankly, none of episodes impressed me, ranging from plain mediocre to downright atrocious.

And don’t even get me started on the “twist” from “The Ending of the End.” For reasons I can’t really explain, that retroactively ruined the whole show for me.

Op thinks an episode where cheese sandwich needs help getting his laugh back Gets it back after actually seeing that the joy his gags Give Was actually about Over-analyzing

@Dogman15
Frankly, I don’t think that’s possible. Any sort of emotional attachment and nostalgia I’ve had for the show is long gone.

Still haven’t seen it. In fact, I haven’t seen any MLP episode since “Uprooted” as my interest in the show has evaporated…

Yet I keep coming here on Derpibooru to view and comment on fanart. Am I a hypocrite?

Alternatively, you could also read the image description for an explanation:

Helps if you’ve seen “The Last Laugh” (episode).

I believe what is depicted is how the writing staff continuously try using the same tired tropes (which is what Pinkie Pie represents) and how the fans have become bored with the show. Kinda like how those in the analysists community continuously talk about how the show has improved over the seasons when in reality it’s just more of the same.

I’ve brought this up before, but in the later seasons (3 being the worst in my opinion) the show progression just felt… cookie-cutter. Like the writers just wanted to slog it out as fast as they could so that they could work on the projects they really wanted to do. Like the episode where Tirek made his return appearance (first in FIM) to me, it felt like there was a lot of missed opportunities to flesh him out as a villian. I mean the guy was planning on conqering all of Equstria for what seemed like a millennia and instead of depicting him as this vile, devious and cunning antagonist; he’s simply depicted as this one dimensional character that just stomps around and making a mess of things meanwhile the Royal Sisters dont even formulate a plan to stop him they just leave it up to Twilight to figure it out. So the first two acts just end up being shlock but they try to make it up with a DBZ fight scene ( because everyone loves those ). To me it just felt like pandering towards the end to make up for such a lacluster introduction of a character. But that is just one example. I don’t think that every episode in the later seasons are bad, but I can tell lazy writing when I see it.

That seems quite fitting with the switch from Thiessen to Miller. S6 was the weakest season imo, but after he got into the groove things improved, S7 was great.

I’m glad I don’t feel that way that Cheese is feeling.

Call me impressionable or having low standards, but I never got the impression that the show declined in quality. There was one point where I actually did back when Season 6 was airing but I learned to have an open mind towards the show overall and see things from a wider perspective. Now I’m not denying that the show has had some bad writing decisions or terrible episodes, but I’m not one to suddenly yell out that the show has declined in quality or anything. Even if it isn’t the same as it was almost ten years ago, I’m glad that it’s changing and reaching new heights and I can appreciate that. I’m looking forward to what they’ll do next up to the finale.
LightningBearer

Meh. There are stronger and weaker episodes in season 9, and there were stronger and weaker episodes in seasons 1 and 2. The “The Show Has Declined!” narrative is apparently very important to some people, but all I know is that my enjoyment of the show has remained pretty consistent through it all. And I’ve been pretty satisfied with how this last season’s been tying things up.

    If there’s one silver lining to the show ending, it’ll be that people will have less to complain about.
