four months late but here’s an explanation
 
back in 2016, Lauren Faust let loose a series of tongue-in-cheek tweets all about fake lore of Equestria. She then revealed that all of the lore she revealed was fake, except for one small tidbit: that one pony in the show, that showed up in Season 1, is transgender.
 
The fandom then collectively remembered two things: That Trixie was originally conceived of as a stallion, not a mare, and that Trixie has the eyes of a stallion in Seasons 1 and 2 (the seasons that Lauren worked on the show)- look closely, and she only has one ‘pool of light’ in her eyes, like stallions do, while all other mares (and colts) have two, and fillies have three. (the baby cakes are demons).
 
Combine that with the fact that she constantly says her own name, which is very obviously a girl name, and she’s obviously a trans mare. (If she were a trans stallion, she’d essentially be constantly deadnaming herself, which doesn’t make sense.)
 
The fandom briefly latched onto this… and just as quickly forgot about it, save for a few that still remember.
