Well technically, app is just short for application, which is what Windows had already been calling EXEs since at least XP and probably earlier.

But the real reason is probably the whole convergence-with-mobile kick they’ve been on since Windows 8…

Why must the EqG emojis be so cute and appealing? I HATE the real-life emojis so much. Every time I try to run an old 32-bit program from the 90s on my new computer that has Windows 10, and it says “This app can’t run on your PC” I see emojis laughing at me. Laughing. Why does Windows insist on calling them “apps” when they are in fact EXEs.
