Regarding the relationship between Spike and Twilight, I’ve seen a comparison that kinda works in that it resembles Lilo and Nani… minus anything about dead parents of course. Twilight is his guardian probably, and he does look up to her. Such a thing probably isn’t unheard of regarding older siblings.
Yeah, the idea of Applejack’s hat closet isn’t a plot hole, just say that she often wears duplicates for the worst case scenario of it getting destroyed somehow (which I believe has happened at least once).
Just say the one with actual sentimental value only comes out on special occasions or something like that.
@AC97
I agree with you that the person shouldn’t have been rude or gloating about it. I can understand why they would want to gloat given how some people were adamant on only the mom headcanon being valid, but two wrongs don’t make a right.
@Background Pony Number 17
You’re right. Both interpretations are completely valid. I was just a bigger fan of the sibling headcanon due to what Season 1 hinted towards (e.g. Spike saying “You’re not my mommy” to Twilight in the Winter Wrap Up episode and Twilight being a literal child when Spike hatched). (That and even though Faust isn’t working on the show anymore, I liked the idea she had about Celestia taking care of him when he was younger.)

That too. The show has its own fair share of inconsistencies in regards to continuity.
I recall the exact quote in Flurry Heart’s debut episode was that they’ve never seen an alicorn born in Equestria. Luna and Celestia were born before the founding of Equestria and they haven’t seen any other natural born alicorns until Flurry Heart was born.
As for Applejack’s hat. Perhaps she has one specific hat that her father gave her that has sentimental value to her but also has extra similar looking hats. That one’s not too far fetched to me since something similar happened to me before (but with a T-shirt instead). The original had more sentimental value to me but I did have extra similar ones.

Or how the journal of the two sisters mentions both Luna and Celestia were born Alicorns and sent to Equestria, but along comes Flurry Heart and suddenly they’ve never seen one born before.
Like the time we saw Applejack had a closet of the same hat but in the most recent holiday special she speaks of the hat fondly and how it was apparently given to her by her father…
@Background Pony #0D39
That was my understanding of that scene, too. So right now I’m not sure what to think–both “siblings” and “mother/son” interpretations seem equally valid.
Edit: On second thought, maybe the writers are being deliberately ambiguous just to make us question it.
Except the episode’s writer was clearly unaware of the previous episode where Twilight’s heart breaks when Spike makes the comment about having a real parent. This episode was a direct contradiction of that scene.
@Background Pony #F312
I didn’t even say it was a headcanon or that I thought my idea/opinion was fact. I just said that I liked the sibling idea better. I’m aware that the show is pointing more towards the mother and son relationship.
@Fwelin
I’m aware that the recent episode with Sludge made it explicit that the current writers of the show view it as mother and son relationship. I just preferred the idea that Lauren Faust and some of the earlier writers had about the two of them being more of a sibling relationship.
@Background Pony #F312
I still like the idea of Twilight being like an older sister while Velvet and Celestia acted as mother figures. Twilight herself was still a child when she hatched Spike so it would make more sense that they did most of his rearing when he was little.
@Flummoxed Phoenix
Spike has confirmed he was raised by Twilight. I’m sure others helped her, but apparently he didn’t form any closer bonds with them.
