Such advancements were not feasible at the time; it blew everybody’s mind just to have a 3D game to begin with. Back even those graphics we laugh at today were considered astounding.
Much later they started to think “be nice if the Iron Boots were on a C button” and stuff like that.
Edited
I don’t know if it’s in the HD remake or not, though. They might have patched it out and made the fight legitimately winnable instead :P
To the game’s credit too, it was the first of it’s kind so they were still figuring out how 3D worked. Like, I remember reading about how the reason they had Navi and the camera Lakitu in that and Mario 64 is they figured they had to actually personify the camera and aiming reticle to make people understand how they worked :P
Oh, I never knew that.
Also, as far as the changing water levels go, it’s a cool idea, but it would’ve worked better if it was handled like the Divine Beasts from Breath of the Wild, wherein you can operate the beast at any point from within, as long as you have the map.
Possibly, but an intentional bad game mechanic is still a bad one :D

It does have one use, thanks to a glitch. With a broken Giant’s Knife you can kill Dark Link in like 20 seconds by spamming the forward stab. I don’t know why, but it cuts right through all of his defenses and hits with every strike :D
@JackmarandDash
I’ll give it credit that the changing water levels was a cool idea in theory, just that it’s not fun :D
You nailed it exactly why i hate that Temple. The switching constantly is annoying as hell.
I have no idea why anyone would use the Giant’s Knife, unless they didn’t like the Master Sword but didn’t know the Biggoron’s Sword existed. The only advantage the Giant’s Knife presents is that it’s faster to get than the Biggoron’s Sword, but literally everything else about the Giant’s Knife is terrible.
You’re correct - he can only jump on the Master Sword. The Biggoron’s Sword (or Giant’s Knife if you insist) is one of the “exploits” along with the Megaton Hammer and Din’s Fire.
Edited
Except I don’t recall him doing that when you try it with the Biggoron’s Sword.
Then again, I haven’t played OoT in the past two or three years, so I may be misremembering.
To be fair, that’s probably an intentional reference: Dark Link being impossible normally and easy with an exploit is exactly what he was like in Zelda 2. Z2 DL is one of the hardest bosses in any Zelda game unless you crouch in the corner and spam stabs.
Possibly also a reference, OoT Dark Link has a specific reaction to stabs where he leaps on your sword like Yoda and counter-attacks…

It’s not that it’s hard, like I actually think the Forest Temple is the hardest of all the dungeons, but that it just sucks to go through. You constantly need to keep going to the three water changing places to change the water level, you constantly need to keep pausing and swapping in and out the iron boots, most of the dungeon is just blindly groping around looking for keys (not solving puzzles or exploring, but just needle-in-a-haystack stuff), and even the dungeon item is just an upgrade rather than a true new item. It also has that one key that’s hidden in a really bullshit way and easy to miss, but you won’t realize this until you go really deep into the dungeon, hit a locked door, then have to backtrack and search high and low for it. Even the good parts of the dungeon, Morpha and Dark Link, while cool in design and concept, are still annoying in their own right since Morpha’s just really slow to fight and Dark Link is basically impossible if you don’t abuse glitches or game oversights. The whole dungeon is just a total bummer from start to finish, like it’s like someone made you pause the game and go dig a ditch out back before you could continue playing; it’s a total downer and you just wish you didn’t have to bother D:
@Tirimsil
Hell, Lucahjin (one of my favorite YouTubers) did a blind Let’s Play of the N64 version of OoT a few years back, and everyone was saying she was gonna have a super hard time with the Water Temple, but she didn’t really struggle with it at all.
Yes I did. I played OoT and MM on the real N64 hardware in the 90s. I suspect we got it a few years after launch, because I would have been 5 or 6 when it first released.
I also played OoT later on the GameCube release, with Master Quest.
I’ve never played OoT3D or MM3D.
The real reason people hate the Water Temple is constantly having to open the inventory to change to/from the Iron Boots, which all future games addressed by making them a C-Item.
I know why.
I’m guessing you guys never played the original version on the N64.
There were no pointers telling you which way you should go, and it wasn’t much fun to navigate the first few times you played it.
The newer versions of OOT had arrows added, and I believe a couple of other things were tweaked to make the level less of a chore to play through.
It’s easy enough, if you look around to see what the different water levels will and won’t allow you to do.
Oh without a doubt def. Loved those Morpha ones you did awhile back also!
I wasn’t a fan either. It was cool, like Dark Link and Morpha are probably the coolest bosses in that entire game, but the temple was just annoying D:
Those things scared the bejesus out of me D:
What?
I’ve thought of it :D
@Bendy Inkwells

What’s next a Redead?
(Can’t think of anything myself but the combined version might have some potential).
