When I first received Wit, my pet hare, I established an account with the local veterinarian and made sure she knew how to treat hares. You don’t wait until there’s a fire to get a fire extinguisher, so why would you wait for an illness to find a doctor?
Actually they have several parasite board beetles that get under scales are my fave loos like a gold coin then it bites you.
She had canonically lived there for over a year. Plenty of time to look when you are directly in charge of a young dragon. In the episode Secret of My Excess she we learned that “re-shelving day” was a thing, too. She took every book in the library off the shelves.
She didn’t live in Golden Oak Library all her life though so she didn’t know there were no books on the subject there.
The one problem I had with this was Twilight not knowing she had no books on dragons. Not having the books is one thing. Not knowing you don’t have them despite having a dragon in your care for that long isn’t acceptable. She lived in a library and frequented the Canterlot library often when she lived there. She’s also obsessed with learning and took the time to learn things she didn’t need to. She had no excuse not to look for these books. If she’d looked, she would have known they weren’t there.
Then there’s the fact that the molt came as a surprise in season 8, when they’ve known Ember since season 6.
Twilight doesn’t seem to make any effort to understand dragon development, not even now that she has access to the source.
But there are no books on Dragons, or pretty much any Dragon experts in Equestria at all. They lucked out by having Zecora know about dragons but who could’ve known she had information?
