No it isn’t. It was a visual gag or a tease and nothing more. Notice how his relationship to Rarity didn’t revolve around his similarities to AJ and instead was based on his passion for dance, similarity to her cole miner role, etc. Rarity was more intimate with him a dude, than she ever was with AJ and explicitly has referred to AJ as her friend while used romance laden language with him and was going to kiss him so quickly despite knowing him for a short time.

The thing is Ragamuffin didn’t have to look like Applejack. It’s too late in the show’s run to use the excuse that the model was an accident by the design department reusing assets or denying that every line of dialogue minus the back story could have come from Applejack’s mouth.
 
There’s an easy fix for this in storytelling: Applejack merely has to introduce Ragamuffin as her cousin. Then every similarity can be explained away. But this didn’t happen and nothing came out after the fact. The scene where the girls notices the difference is intentional to point out the similarities.
 
The show is going the path of Lyra and Bon Bon with rarijack; and this is coming from someone that would have placed the money against the very idea of a ship before Roller Coaster of Friendship.

Ragamuffin’s accent was a heavily stereotypical British one, with no countryisms to be found. It had nothing in common with AJ’s other than them both being accents.

He looked like AJ and spoke in an accent with plenty of “countryisms”. Yes, the joke in the script was that Rarity was concocting another overwrought romantic fantasy to echo “Titanic”… but the production staff at least clearly wanted to play with the “Rarity in denial” angle.

Not really. Him looking like AJ is a visual gag and aside from that they are completely different. His name isn’t related to apples, his personality is nothing like AJ’s, they have different backstories, and Rarity’s attraction to him doesn’t seem to based on how he looks but his personality and background (ex aspiring dancer). He’s more of a reference to Jack from the Titanic and him looking like AJ was thrown in there as a meta joke probably due to the reference and troll the shippers. Also the fact Rarity seemed more intimate with a guy than AJ should tell us where she swings.

Guys, hear me out. I have a solution: Just have all of the Mane Six+Sunset in an open relationship with each-other. Shipping problem solved. Forever.

Now I want the writers to give Pony Applejack a love interest named “Leatherface” or “Pinhead”, to see if they call pull this off again, but with an even LESS family-friendly name.

Honesty I would put Applejack with Twilight but I will agree. Applejack’s relationship with Pinkie Pie has been amazing since Pinkie Apple Pie. The two have another bond that the other girls can not match.
 
I think though you need separate mlp AJ and EGQ’s AJ. From a shipping standpoint, right now rarijack has a chance of happening in EQGs while in mlp rarijack appears more one sided at best, more on rarity’s end. If I were a betting person I would say the the longer EQG last after mlp with the rapid changing times, the more likely we’ll get something like the ending of The Legend of Korra with the ship.
 
So two universe, two different things can happen. And of course no canon shipping has to happen.

look, I’m going to be honest, pinkie’s relationship with applejack is way better than rarijack, they also have a long and wonderful story together, so I sincerely prefer you to put aj with pinkie, pinkie and aj deserve to be happy together

Soooo the last special focused on bring up Applejack and Rarity have this long history and a connection that is stronger than what they have with the other main 6. Now this special has Rarity falling madly in love with a guy who just happens to look every bit like Applejack with the difference and or joke being that Applejack is good on land and this love interest is good at sea. And even that difference being negated with P.P.O.V (season 6, ep. 22).
 
Even non-shippers should see the writing on the wall.

Rarity has a clear and defined taste, here the gals realize that.

This was the scene where everyone realized Rarity is unknowingly attracted to Applejack.

I’ll be honest, I was fully expecting him to turn out to be an alternate universe Applejack or something.
