Earth ponies are not stronger physically, (maybe they are more prone to it, but really stronger in general).
 
They are the more RESILIENT ones. They have a lot of stamina, you only need to look at AJ and Pinkie, they never stop doing things. They also have their connection with nature.

Earth Ponies are magically connected to the earth and nature, so I always figured they were statistically stronger simply because their magic made them better suited to hard labor jobs. An earth pony that got an education and became a lawyer wouldn’t be stronger then Shinning Armor just because he’s an Earth Pony.

@Sjogre it’s weird when dealing with physical strength. If we go by Fall Weather Friends, Rainbow has stronger front legs apparently, going by the hoof wrestle. AJ’s back legs can obliterate a strongman bell. Rarity has a mean karate kick too.
 
Speaking to the image, it always weirds me out seeing AJ with wings or a horn. I just don’t think it suits her colour scheme well.

Enh. Applejack’s strong, but that’s because she’s worked on her strength a lot. She’s not insanely stronger than Rainbow or Rarity. As a unicorn, should have the same level of training, and therefor the same level of strength.
 
Her brother is the one that has earth pony-only levels of strength. Big MacIntosh is also vastly stronger than Applejack.
 
Mind you, Shining Armor has one heck of a throwing arm on him, so Big’s strength might not be earth pony exclusive at all.

The only downside for her would be being unable to control an unfamiliar force. Something that I can see many earth ponies struggling with if they were to suddenly change races.

Would this actually have any downsides for Applejack? Unlike her brother, she doesn’t have actual super strength, and unicorns can still buck trees and move carts just fine.

TBH Applejack would look creepy as a unicorn. Besides, I always loved her for who she is, a simple earth pony who achieves everything without help of magic.
