Here in NZ, unless you’re at someone’s place doing work (like a trade or what I do), the respectful thing to do is take off your shoes; so I guess it’s a cultural thing.
At least in the USA, wearing shoes inside seems fairly common. When I was younger I only started seeing shoes left at the door when going over to my Asian friends’ houses.
