Detailed syntax guide

Background Pony Number 17
My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

Why This Works: Unlike mammals, birds cannot move their eyes around in their sockets; they don’t have muscles there the way we do. So, a bird’s vision is fixed relative to the position of its head; if its head moves, its field of view moves, too. For a bird to keep watching an object while its body is moving, its head has to move in the opposite direction to compensate.

That’s why, for example, pigeons’ heads bob while they walk, and why you can get a chicken to do “the cool chicken trick”. It’s not trying to be cool, it’s trying to keep its surroundings in focus.
