Ask Movie Slate - Halloween 2017 - Re-visiting “Cabin in the Woods”

You can find the original Cabin in the Woods update in this link!

This will be a running theme through all of Halloween this year, as we will be revisiting some of the old Movie Slate updates that I felt could’ve been made better justice. Besides, we’ve fallen into a trend of remakes and sequels when it comes to horror movies, and movies in general, so making a thematic month about the subject felt appropriate. Worry not, we’ll be talking about other movies I’ve never reviewed with Movie Slate, but we will be mostly revisiting movies we have reviewed in the past. While my opinion on them might have not varied much, I will be sharing my thoughts on them regardless.

And with that said, “Cabin in the Woods” is a pretty good movie. I’m not in love with it, but I very much like it. It’s a movie that knows it’s a movie and takes all its elements to create a rather on-the-nose commentary/satire/spoof of the classic horror genre. At times it gets a bit too obnoxious, since it feels like it’s too smart for us simpletons and so it focuses too much on pointing a finger at how clever it is, but the likeable characters, the terrific special effects, the gripping pulse of the director and the overall harmless fun everyone is having with it are enough for me to excuse the way the movie presents itself. Sure it’s a rather pretentious allegory but it’s a lot of fun and I can’t write it off if all it wants is to give us a good time.

“Cabin in the Woods” manages to stay afloat as a fun horror parody and a metaphor about movie making held up by it’s good execution and likeable portrayals of both heroes, villains and monsters. Unfortunately it doesn’t get elevated beyond that due to it’s pretentious screenplay and rather obvious symbolism.

I’m not used to drawing my gryphon guy. It was fun to rediscover his design, and the things about him that I think don’t work. I’m considering getting rid of the purple markings under his eyes, if only for the sake of brevity. It takes too long to draw his stupid markings, even though I think it’s fitting to the constant bags I have under my eyes. Still, it was fun to draw a rather simple comic strip for once, something without elaborate backgrounds that I could have fun with.

Also shout out to :iconmariedrose: who’s featured here as a cameo in the first panel.

As for a discussion piece for the comments, please let me know what you think about the current revival we’ve had of eighties horror and eighties movies in general. Do you think this trip down memory lane will last forever? Or will it end up bursting the entertainment bubble that Hollywood has managed to inflate?

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate and every single one I receive.

Thank you!
