I acknowledge that. People want to live their fantasies and not think too hard about it. I do because I write and I notice details, or the lack thereof, as a result of that.

I legitimately got a chuckle out of that last bit, and I agree with the second bit.

I suppose if you really stretch your willing suspension of disbelief your explanation works. But it’s still a yawning stretch and I honestly believe that if someone wants a baby in the equation they should be prepared to go the distance and justify it properly. If you want to say magic is responsible, do it in a way that clarifies how that worked. It can be done without graphic detail.

It’s still an absurdly loose justification, given that Adagio is clearly displeased here by the result. And your justification essentially uses Sunset’s magic as wish fulfillment, which is pretty much what the MLS concept is on the whole.

Not wrong, but that was my own attempt to find some reason, whereas the typical response is “It’s magic, I don’t have to explain.” And really, my supposition was that deep down, she did want one, she’s just incredibly shocked and dismayed here because there is no possible way she could be pregnant after sleeping with Sunset, therefore she will be accused of cheating.

What bothers me most is when otherwise-good writers use it. If I can briefly go off-topic, I hate to crap on Adgerelli and Sciset Diary (because I love that blog and it’s story) but it has always bothered me that the very definitely ace Twilight got pregnant with Sunset’s baby…somehow, because of reasons that are never explained. I was left feeling disappointed.

I’ll preface this by saying: I too greatly enjoy Sciset diary. They are a wonderful artist, and a suprisingly good writer. But… they don’t like to explain much of anything. I’ll leave it there.

Back on topic, I really feel like people using MLS need to consider what they’re saying. Because what it amounts to is “our love is so strong and pure that God graced us with a baby” and I’m not really sure that’s what any writer wants to say if they’re any good at it.

Well, god, or the universe at large. Something made this miracle. Probably that threesome with the angel had something to do with it, Dash spiked the punch and everyone woke up with a hangover and covered with glitter.

Thank you, and I will acknowledge this: people use the magical lesbian spawn willy-nilly with nary an attempt to justify or even study it in universe. It’s something we’re just expected to accept, and to be frank, it bothers me a little as well. There is an entire series of books having to do with how awesome Cloudkicker is in which if you make love with anypony you have feelings for you will be at risk to get pregnant (and yes, that somehow includes male gay couples) and you’re just supposed to roll with it. You need to take potions, wear an amulet, or basically have sex with people you feel nothing for or actively hate to have sex without risk, there.

My argument here is not that MLS makes sense, it’s that if it makes sense for anyone, it’s specifically Sunset because she has great magical potential on her own, and if some sort of resonance occurred in which the amulet read that Dagy wanted a baby… magic might find a way in that situation.

Edit: Ugh, Derpi I clicked that anon tag off for a reason, why would I want it on for the reply?

I appreciate your attempt at devil’s advocate, but it has a flaw in that the girls do have a basic understanding of how their magic works, as shown in Overpowered. The only case in which their magic can do things they can’t control is if any of them is abusing their powers extensively. While that is a pretty obvious justification for preventing the girls from going power mad, it is an in-universe one and must be abided.

And with Sunset’s empathy magic lying more in reading thoughts and emotions, I don’t buy that she would be capable of magically creating a pregnancy. Even to the extent that her magic gets out of control, it’s merely hearing everyone’s thoughts.

As for the magic in Equestria Girls not being as thoroughly understood… while that’s true, it’s still established as being Equestrian magic and would logically mostly follow the same rules. While Starlight does break the “stable time loop” spell to make it do what she wants, it bears remembering that she still had the base spell to work with. And it was, as I mentioned earlier, a complex enough spellwork to require ink and paper. And Starlight had to cast it intentionally.

The fundamental flaw that lies in almost every case of magical lesbian spawn is that it happens accidentally via inexplicable means, not even necessarily lovemaking. And magic just doesn’t behave that way. I applaud your attempt to explain it though!

Just playing devil’s advocate here, I am also a writer, and I am prepared to give a lot of leeway for suspension of disbelief. You’re correct that magic has no known way to change sexes. They did have that throwaway line in magic duel. However, it was also stated that magic could only perform stable time loops and only for a set duration.

Magic is the science of Equestria, and new things are being learned all of the time about it. With the addition of Starlight, apparently we’re accelerating that process because she knows nothing about the supposed limitations and will mix and match and create something brand new just to see if it can happen.

So yes, magic has rules, but only because certain things are thought to be true, because of repeated experimentation. Now, let’s consider something else. Magic in Equestria girls is even more of an unknown. None of them know why they turn into anthros, except it seems to relate to music, or friendship. They are still finding out things about the amulets they wear. There seem to be no hard and fast rules about those at all.

So I propose to you, that being the bearer of the amulet of empathy, in a place of wild magic, and being a powerful magic user in her natural form, if anyone could get someone pregnant by accident during lovemaking, it would be Sunset.

Feel free to disagree, but that’s my best argument.

Except there’s literally no genetic interaction where magic is concerned.

There are things that magic in the MLP’verse is specified to be unable to do. If time travel requires complex spellwork, how the heck do you create another lifeform by accident? Nevermind getting pregnant, which requires genetic interaction that magic can also not do by accident. Magic can only be used via deliberate action, and can only be used to manipulate things that already exist.

Magic can’t create something from nothing. Not deliberately, never mind by accident. That’s a fact we became aware of all the way back in season 1, and it’s never changed. You can argue that a woman’s egg could be transformed into one fertilized by the genetic material of someone else, but again this could hardly be done accidentally by the spellcaster nor could it be done without the knowledge of the woman being manipulated.

Magical lesbian spawn is, like many things attributed to magic, a form of wish fulfillment. That’s all it is, someone making a baby pop into their favorite ship without any justification for it having happened besides “magic”. It’s lazy writing from an author making excuses for why this couldn’t be done correctly. As a writer, it annoys me because I know that magic doesn’t work that way in MLP. Not even Cadance can do that, and love/family is her specialty.

@Kalash93
“That’s impossible” is a metaphor people use when they are surprised; it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s literally impossible or that it won’t become possible after research, particularly with the fact that changelings will probably now allow ponies to study how they shift. Secondly, ‘magical lesbian spawn’ doesn’t require a literal penis to be involved at all. I mean this is something we are close to being able to do in real life via cellular reprogramming and stem cells, so to say magic can’t is kind of silly.

It’s magic. In what way does it “work?”

What I don’t get is why so many people are so adamant that this must be the ONE thing magic CANNOT do in a world where you can turn your parents into potted plants or your friends into breezies.

You know, just once I’d like to see someone actually justify the existence of a magical lesbian spawn. I know magic can do a lot of bizzare things, but conception is a particularly biological interaction. It requires the very specific interactions of two different kinds of genetic material, one from each parent. And I’ve never seen it explained how magic accomplishes this without it turning someone futa.

Maybe I’m being particular about it, but it’s a weak explanation that irritates me every time I see it. Magic doesn’t work that way, even when you love each other.
