Maybe he is there because of Derpy. They are also together in the baking club and were hanging out a lot during LOE. .3.

I really hope this is Flash just being into science because if otherwise, it’d imply he’s in the club to be close to Twilight which at this point would be downright creepy of him…

After Derpy managed to detonate chemicals that were only supposed to change colors, she decided to see what else she could do with (and to) chemistry.

No, that is also something that bothers me, but I did not noticed her until I was finish with writting.  
But than again, they probably only put those two in because they did not need do make new models.
