Always happy to discuss the finer points of pony evolution. Not much of an amateur scientist, but I can at least logic a few things out based on how Earth's own animals and species evolved. Bright colors are nearly always a warning in nature here, after all. And, as for brown?
Hot chocolate, a cool winter night, a heavy blanket and a crackling fire. Despite its color, brown is the comfiest. An excellent color choice, not to mention a cute cat to draw inspiration from!
