The reason why Starlight magic beam is so powerful like Twilight fighting Tirek is because she’s angry. Her magic power level is powered by her emotion. At that time Discord just keep fueling her anger, at the same time make her even more powerful.
 
The way Starlight banish him it’s look like she kill him.  
The real situation is Starlight banish him from school area only his physical form, easy to say Discord physical form can’t get into the school after that but his soul or ghost form can still enter it. His not dead, his physical form is at somewhere else.

Yeah Dissy WAS the problem. I made this comparison before but it bears repeating. It’s like your younger sibling coming in to try and take over you and your friends’ co-op game and despite telling him/her numerous times to please stop bugging them and stop trying to pull the controllers from them, they just get angrier and angrier until they decide to throw a tantrum and trash the living room; earning themselves a timeout. Then they just sit in the corner and scream until someone suggests apologizing to the younger sibling. They do so, the sibling gets off scot-free, and everything is supposedly fine.
