I like the fan theory that Spike was an unfertilized egg and Twilight’s magic somehow fertilized it (and that’s why he is purple because he is part pony).
There’s no answer that isn’t equally depressing. Either it’s the above scenario, dead parents, unless Spike’s “dad” is legit, half and half of those two options, or ponies stole his egg on Celestia’s orders. Very slim chance there’s some convoluted way around those, like there was a diplomatic exchange and somewhere there’s a pony slightly older than the crusaders raised like a dragon.
He was actually wary about her partaking in the Gauntlet and was convinced she couldn’t partake in it without being harmed since she wasn’t a “big strong dragon”.
Adding to it, she had the title of “PRINCESS Ember” before the Gauntlet and Garble actually told other dragons to not go near her for fear of Torch attacking them to defend her.
I doubt he lives with Ember. I’m not completely certain, but I think adult dragons live away from the Dragon Lands, hence the reason for a Great Dragon Migration, and the Dragon Lands are occupied solely by teen dragons and presumably young and newborns.
Obviously, there may need to be more wouldbuilding information surrounding dragons in order for anything about dragons to make any fucking sense, lol.
Except for Torch, he’s apparently a great parent.
