Hey, if you’ve got the tools and the time to learn, all the power to you! I used to draw (pencil & paper) a lot when I was in school. I’ve gotten terribly rusty since then thanks to being busy all the time, but I try to find time to write, roleplay and game when I’m not doing something to make money. Sometimes you have to have a creative outlet, and you’ve certainly gotta start somewhere.
 
I’ve thought about buying a drawing tablet and polishing my rusty old skills, but inevitably I keep finding other things taking my money. Maybe one of these days!

Thanks! After I spend probably the next few years putting my nose to the grindstone when it comes to art, considering I have many art books for Sci-fi, Dragons, ponies, etc. I plan to make more creations come to life my own way. As it stands I can’t really afford artists anymore and I have a decent drawing tablet. No use in letting potential go to waste I’d say.

I have a friend who created a play on Little Red Riding Hood as a joke character. Turned out to be so popular they had to develop a proper back story and everything for her.
 
I’ve had funny ideas for OC’s over the years, but I wanted one that was workable before I did something dumb for the hell of it.
 
As it happens I have a pretty solid knack for playing canon characters, which is part of the reason my OC took so long to develop. I tried playing Octavia back when she was just a one scene wonder and my portrayal was so well liked that it went from there. It was originally my idea of a joke.
 
A dragon that hoards treasure chests? That’s pretty funny.

Bruh, preach. I do the same shit. I’ve had OC’s go through re-designs completely even for fear of it being bad. But being a perfectionist is a gift/curse all in one.
 
Usually as long as my OC has a decent name, passable story or better, design fits with their given narrative, and the final check, having a second opinion on it. Then finalize. But to be fair sometimes I just like to go AWOL with ideas like my dragon Chester Collector, who was designed first to be a joke then became a thing. She hunts for treasure, dumps the contents and collects the chests instead. Funny how things turn out lol.

My only OC is a pegasus, and that was after 6 years of burning through ideas until I was satisfied with the result. Name, style, colors, cutie mark…doing it right requires investment, and you may not get it right the first time or even the second.
 
Some people can’t take criticism. I am my own biggest critic, and if I write something that I reread later and conclude to be stupid, nobody else ever sees it because I change it. I don’t have anything I’ve written in a stage of long enough to release and satisfactorily approved by me, to give you an idea.
 
I do roleplay a little here and there though, which has helped immensely.

I don’t care if it’s Alicorn, Bat, breezy, Draconniqus, or Umbran. What I do care about however is if it’s designed well and organically fits within the source material that it’s placed into.
 
Meaning irrelevant of what it is, as long it’d be something we see on the show and is close to how similar things are depicted, then there is a problem. The moment there is a deviation is when I start getting a little iffy.
 
Ie; The show never used hard/dark colors [Red, Black, Neon Green] for characters with the exception of the purest evil(Chryssi/Tirek), Everything is generally a blend, soft color or subtle gradient [Cyan, Magenta, Mango,Tan, beign, Crème, etc]
 
The other thing is something or other about internal character design and personality.

well. I would say my most popular besides the hate subject, is a rd recolor i got. She’s an earthpony but actually got magic inside of her that rivals alicorns. But for the most part, she just a royal guard aswell as train new ponies to become guards. And she train them in verious ways, including by becoming a giant. Tho with that she can’t stay big for too long. The bigger she gets, the shorter time she can stay that size.

Pretty much so. No one likes a mary sue. It makes for bland and uninteresting characters. But I agree. Alot of Alicorn OC’s turn out to be that way and after 7 years, the debate and revival of the alicorn archetype is basically past. The archtype for alicorns has been set and I don’t think it’ll ever be lifted. Sad but true.
 
If you wnat to make an OC and get it known these days, alicorn OC’s are something to be avoided. Not trying to be mean or whatever, just the reality we live in when it comes to this fandom lol. I have quite a lot of OC’s myself and Alicorn’s I avoid. Just eaiser to write for and work with in all honesty.

As you said, most people don’t really care because most people don’t write fanfics or do roleplay. But most people don’t know what a Mary Sue is, either.
 
Lazy writing is always extremely evident in alicorn OC’s. They’re not inherently bad, but they are the single most likely to be a Mary Sue and are judged accordingly. I’ve seen several over the years that are very well written characters that aren’t royalty or related to royalty nor are they invincible and flawless. Unfortunately, it takes effort to do that and I have seen many, many more that are lazy Mary Sues. The creators of such characters often wonder why nobody likes their writing.
 
The stigma is unfortunate (in being based on the concept of alicorns being gods), but also well-earned (in that so many lazy people make alicorns that are gods).

As I said before the horse has been beat for 7 years lol. And I did tell him too that this would not really help the cause becuase of the attitude it emits. It overshadows the fact he wants people to not judge alicorn OC’s off the basis of being just an alicorn.

This kinda illustrates why people have a problem with alicorn OC’s. It’s the whole attitude. People who make alicorn OC’s are perceived as wanting to have an overpowered Mary Sue pony, and responding to such criticism with “I can do whatever I want, haters.” just makes you look like exactly the kind of person they expect you to be.
 
My response to a situation like this is effectively “Who ever said an alicorn had to be a royal goddess? Maybe I just want a pegasus with basic unicorn skills like telekinesis.” Because that much is true. Just because a pony has a horn on their head doesn’t mean they’re a wizard. Wings and a horn don’t make you a god.
 
That said, if you ARE making an alicorn Mary Sue god OC, you will get crap for it and you should expect to because it’s lazy and nobody is interested in the hero (or villain, as is often the case with the cat-eyed, bat-winged red and black alicorns) who is unstoppable and always wins.
 
There’s valid points to both sides of this very old and very tired debate.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. You’ll get a few downvotes for this work but eh… people will dislike alicorn OC’s regardless of story or whateve’s. Just how it works. I like seeing OC’s all the time and looking into them for story purposes. Fun stuff. All I’m saying is you do you. (But also don’t go in receiving high praise for the work you put out. Not saying you did so, just notifying.)

I find this a bit cringy, slightly edgy, however I understand why you might not like the fact most people don’t like alicorn OC’s. (But let’s be real here, people don’t usually care in general anyway and I don’t think you should either.)
 
Your OC is your OC, good, bad, whatever. Again I understand who you are aiming this towards but this type of image only really just brings up a dead horse that’s already been beaten up for about 7 years I’d say.
 
I understand that you care for ponysonas that get berated from the get-go however, putting out images like this did not make alicorn OC’s look any better dear. It only illustrates your mindset about others opinions. Which is false, the image says you don’t care yet you obviously care. This image is not an effective way to get your point across I don’t think, but that’s my two cents.

I see what you mean but you don’t have to announce it to the world. This isn’t the case with everyone. I like alicorn OC’s.
