There’s never any mention of higher learning aside from Celestia’s school for unicorns. Getting a cutie mark definitely doesn’t qualify you to leave school. The educational system is ill defined.
 
That being said, most ponies seem to be doing just fine, one way or another. Equestrian society is definitely western, but also highly idealistic.

Starburst probably lived of Neetbux or his parents cash(his mother seems well off). Now hes a glorified babysitter for a royal couple so hes most likely fine.
 
Moondancer is highly intelligent so probably on some kind of stipend, parents money or also neetbux.
 
Foals who already got their cutiemarks (so found their talent and likely future place in life) still went to school with those who didnt (cmcs up until they did) and probably still do.
 
 
The education system is probably mostly like western one since its a western show and they just copied that.

Equestria already has all of those things and therefore Communism would work differently there. As far as we can tell, a pony goes to school for as long as needed and eventually finds something to do to subsist. Judging by Sunburst’s situation (he’s all but stated to be unemployed) he seems to be doing okay. Same goes for Moondancer. We don’t know of an “age” where ponies go from basic education to higher education but considering these two are both avid learners and otherwise not gainfully employed neither are homeless or starving.
 
Definitionally, Communism is about everyone working together to help each other succeed. Equalism, while not QUITE this, is certainly fundamentally similar; the idea being that if nobody is special then nobody has anything to argue about and thus everyone can be friends. And if everyone can be friends, they can all help each other succeed.
