Right, I’m going by memory but if it was someone else working with it, then it was because his perception was speeding up at that time. I seem to recall him ripping arpart a milk carton though because it wasn’t pouring. In that case it’s an issue of applying force to the milk that drives it to similar speeds that he’s experiencing(stupid-fast) and slowly having that energy bleed off as he waits for gravity to do its usual job. Which it can’t at those speeds. Thus the milk slows as his application of force bleeds off. Neither will toast cook in a toaster, as that requires everything around him to be working at the higher speed.

It wasn’t stopped in mid air, it was falling very slowly in comparison to his perceptions. When you drop something, it takes a moment for it to accelerate to it’s terminal velocity.
As I said, he didn’t slow time. That would be too difficult. He accelerated himself. Which do you think takes less energy, speeding/slowing one individual, or speeding/slowing everything around them? Even if he slowed the planet itself, that wouldn’t stop the sun and stars from “moving” in our perception. Going farther, you’d need to slow the entire universe. Which is incredibly energy consuming, to the point of being nearly impossible.

That’s why many people are moving to time-slow-down/time-speed-ups instead of time-stops.

…in my opinion at least…

For some reason I’m reminded of the time Dexter was running late and slowed time so that he could be ready on-time. He was at one point doing homework and because he was accelerated, he set the paper on fire while writing at his regular speed.
