I get this was posted half a decade ago, but I want to throw in my two bits.
“The Wrong Way” was cutting corners. The only reason the Flim-Flam brothers made more barrels in the end is because they turned off the quality control, and the only reason they turned off the quality control was because Applejack and her friends were pulling ahead “The Right Way”. Those two were doomed to eat a loss either way.
