Fluttershy’s counterparts in all previous generations were Earth Ponies. If it’s dumb to make her a unicorn, then it’s just as dumb to make her a Pegasus.

Fluttershy is an unicorn because the ponies in G5 probably will be divided into realms: Earth Ponies in Ponyville, Pegasi in Cloudsdale and Unicorns in Everfree Forest. The production staff really liked unicorn Fluttershy. And once again: It’s just fanart!

I could understand changing their design a little, but making Fluttershy a unicorn and Twilight Sparkle an earth pony is kinda dumb.

The leaks mentioned Cutie Mark magic being a possibility, ergo possibly all ponies can use that type of magic. Also, the leaks described that they intended for G5 to be for an older audience compared to G4 (and they mentioned Gravity Falls as an influence).
 
The designs here are just concept art and they’re VERY likely to change in the future (especially due to the fact that staff wants to simply the designs so they can be easier to animate). Concept art for a show can and usually is very drastically different from the final product. G5’s not coming out until 2020 so that’s plenty enough time for things to change from what we’ve seen in the leaks.

Oh dear, I have a mixed feeling here. Gen 5 looks too furry and hybrid. I really don’t like Twilight Sparkle as an Earth pony. If she’s an earth pony, why does she have a magic cutie mark if she can’t do magic? I really hate the new kind of Twilight Sparkle. If MLP Gen 5 looks too ugly and furry, it doesn’t look like for older bronies again. It’s just for little girls again.

That’s the most likely outcome (keeping all Mane Six females). I love the idea of genderbending a Mane Six member, but I don’t think the higher-ups at Hasbro would actually accept such an idea!

I would rather the Mane 6 to be female and perhaps adding a previous existing male character or two in the cast like Spike or Sunburst.

I think they would choose Rainbow and AJ due to their (relatively) unisex names. I would prefer Rainbow and Rarity, to be honest!

Fluttershy & Rarity as males please. Athletic females are almost nonexistent in my life, so AJ/RD should remain female. 🙂

In one of Meghan’s emails, I think she mentioned that the production team wanted two male characters inside the Mane Six. But two important male characters outside the main female ones would be equally nice!
