In G4, Spike’s parents were never shown or mentioned, and Lauren wouldn’t say that they abandoned Spike or died for some unknown reason.
Only as a background character who provides comic relief, yeah. Otherwise, I don’t see what kind of difference or how bad it’d be if Spike never appeared in any generation.
Yes, there was. While he didn’t have any concept art leaked, he was discussed in some of the emails. Also, this is this particular artist’s hopeful interpretation of what she wants G5 Spike to look like based on the image’s title and description. So with that in mind, the G5 and spoiler tags deserve to stay.

Oh yeah. They could easily make Spike around the same age as the Mane 6 in G5 if they want to give him a legit romance with Rarity there.
G3 Spike was not just old, but positively ancient.

She had an admittedly somewhat minor role in G3, I forget whether in G3 proper or in “G3.5”.
She has? I mostly know of Applejack from G1 and G4. When else did she show up?
Eh, AJ has also been present in as many generations as Spike in some form or another.
A male as a main character in a franchise mainly aimed at little girls, wasn’t a new thing in the 80’s look at bow from she-ra.
Does it feel a little strange to anyone else how in a franchise mainly aimed at little girls, and whose main characters have always been female, that it’s a male dragon who’s been with it from the start in every generation?
Winged Spike for G5 sounds good to me too.
Not to mention even if we don’t get Spike immidately, he could appear in a later episode.
Don’t worry, we still know very little of the G5 setting.

No he’s not. We don’t have any leaked images of Spike so we don’t have any idea on what he’s going to look like (if he even appears in G5 at all).
If there’s no Spike, then I’m probably not watching.
Not that I think a Spike-less G5 is all that likely, but still.
*Except My Little Pony Tales, I mean, but Tales was a bit of an odd duck, in hindsight.
Spike wasn’t in Tales (which I guess we can call G1.5) or in the G2 toyline. G2 did have toy dragons in them but they didn’t have names.
I don’t recall Spike being in MLP Tales, but I’d have to check. :3
