Unlike Vegeta though, her pride isn’t really much of a factor in her fights, is it? Tt took until after like the Buu Saga for his pride to stop doing dumb things like “let Frieza transform,” or “let Cell reach Perfect Form,” or “Buu be damned, I want to fight Kakarot!”
His intelligence becomes prominent when his ego’s turned off (most of the Frieza Saga, the Buu Saga, after he came back to life, and admits to himself that Goku is better); if he goes in with a humble perspective and/or he’s gone through enough character development, his intellect shines through more.
(Though I should note, during one of Vegeta’s notorious screwups, he dared Perfect Cell to tank his Final Flash, exploiting his ego, and almost killed him in one hit with that [Cell trying to dodge at the last second saved him], which would’ve ended the entire saga then and there)
…Anyway, to get back on topic, Starlight probably wouldn’t be much for “fair fights/I want a worthy challenge” at any point in the series, unless it was someone she’s actually friends with. She’d probably be the type to cheap shot someone during a transformation sequence ala Android 17.
Starlight is pretty powerful when emotionally centered too. More so really, because she’s not a bad tactician when she’s thinking straight.
…bit like Vegeta. Sure he’s more powerful when he’s emotional, but he also tends to make dumb decisions. Where as on the other hand he’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for when he’s actually focused.
Edited
I always thought Starlight/ Broly were ONLY more powerful due to the fact that both were… ya know…
Coco in the loco
While I’m not sure it’s a given in regards to her having had help, regarding Time Travel (she presumably broke into the Restricted Area of the Canterlot Archives, for the Star Swirl Wing, which would probably lead to… questions, from whoever she’d seek help from, if they’re not being idiots [then again, it wouldn’t be the first time nameless/background ponies were fools]), it is definitely worth noting that she outright admitted that he’d done the hard part for her, in any case.
But in any case, one of Starlight’s strengths is that she can be rather innovative with her use of magic, no, like with her use of that crystalization spell she had for defense, while sparring?
She comes across as being good at improvising, at being inventive. (which is one of the reasons why she’s basically the epitome of a battlemage)

She does remind me slightly of Nu-Broly. Highly emotional, unsocialised, but a good heart underneath.
I always thought of it as a Saiyan type power set. Magic, like Ki, is increased by emotion. Twilight falls into a Goku category, while Starlight falls into more Gohan, or Broly for her S5 shenanigans
She actually explains that it was her hatred of cutie marks that gave her the power boost to make her cutie mark magic work, Maud helped her with the rock, I’m fairly sure she had some help for the Time Travel spell (she did spend a long time in Canterlot beforehand) and her mind control spell was far stronger than she intended and ultimately backfired.
I’m not saying she’s outright bad, but I don’t think her intellectual laziness and tendency towards broad assumptions helps her when it comes to raw academia.
Starlight seems pretty good at experimental spellcasting though. She modified Starswirl’s time spell and threw a bunch of crap together to accidentally mind-control the rest of Twilight’s friends. And buttstamp magic is notoriously tough, and she stole an entire town’s worth of them.
I definitely think Twilight’s always been better at magic. It’s just that Twilight’s a research mage, and Starlight’s a combat mage. The fact that Twilight can still match Starlight one on one in Starlight’s speciality is impressive enough.
On the other side of the equation, Cadance and Mage Meadowbrook seem better at research than Starlight is, and they’re not even unicorns.
I don’t think that’s the case anymore. Starlight’s an old hag; Twilight is a freaking Goddess
That’s exactly correct. Twilight admitted she couldn’t stop Starlight using magic.

mary sues are gross, don’t turn twilight into one
And Starlight could definitely stop her, if she wanted to.
Isn’t that a plus?
Eh, while I agree about season 4, in season 7 she still had some less than satisfying portrayals (her sarcastically apologizing and screaming in someone’s face after accidentally stepping on him, I know she was stressed but that still was a bit too far) to me.
I honestly thought she might have been having a ‘Mickey Mouse’ problem, where being a corporate mascot involved having to be squeaky clean and kinda boring.

I think it’s just a metaconflict rather than anything to do with Twilight herself.
Exactly. Pretty, perfect Princess. I have very little interest in a straightforward heroine Twilight, which was what she was.
The fact that you could only name one great, non season finale episode over those two seasons shows just how dull and out of focus she was becoming.
Calling it fake news didn’t help, seeing as it’s an opinion. So non-falsifiable, and not news.
HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! HA! False news. Twilight had development in Season 4. She had to adjust to her new role as Princess throughout the season. She even had an amazing finale in Twilight’s Kingdom where she fought toe to toe with Tirek and even gave up her Alicorn magic to save her friends but got help from Discord and the Mane 6 were able to defeat and imprison him. And after that, Twilight accepted her new role as she was dubbed “the Princess of Friendship. Plus she was always was Twilight in the episodes not centered around her too. Plus in Season 5, did you forget her trying to adjust to her new castle and trying to make amends with Moondancer? Those weren’t easy. Btw Season 6’‘s portrayal of Twilight was less than stellar in a lot of people’s opinion. At least we have Season 7 fixing it. Let’s all hope Season 8 can do good.
