Eight years ago there sure was.
Man. I still remember the balance back then. Two unicorns, two earth ponies, and two pegasi. To a lot of fans that balance was treated like an unchangeable sacred factor of the show - like the elements of harmony.

The fandom and the show went through a lot of growth and changes over the years.

Faust has outright said that Celestia was training Twilight as her successor from the very beginning. She probably didn’t know whether it would ever happen on screen, but “princess”, at least, was likely planned.

It is harder to say about the alicorn part.

The thing about the princess thing, though, is that it may have been something they were saving for the finale, as unlike most children’s shows, this show has actually had a season finale every, well, season, as well as seasonal arcs. A lot of children’s shows have exactly 65 episodes for syndication purposes, 13 weeks of 5 episodes each, so MMC being the “series finale” was a real possibility, and they may not have known when they were making it that they would even have more seasons. So it may well have been that they were planning on ending the series with Twilight becoming an alicorn princess; MMC certainly had an air of finality around it, and had the show never been renewed, it would have worked well as a series finale.

It is really hard to know/say how much they plan ahead; Discord’s reformation is a multi-season arc at this point, and if the CMC ever get their cutie marks, or Rainbow Dash into the Wonderbolts, that will have been multi-season as well.

Stuff like that is more about sprinkling in future potential threads that you can execute on at a later date, and doing that is fairly easy.

So I can totally see the whole thing having been set up for a long while.

I guess I could see that. But only if Faust somehow knew we’d see more than one season of MLP. While clearly at this point in time we can say Celestia had planned this all along I don’t think the writers actually had thought this far along.

I could be wrong though. I’m just figuring though if I were making a pony story and I wanted my pony to become a princess eventually I would have done that in season one or even season two. To wait until.. what was it? Three? Four? I can’t even remember when she became an alicorn anymore…

To wait until multiple seasons into a children’s cartoon before unleashing a major plot point that was planned since the beginning would be really unlikely since children shows don’t usually get more than one or two seasons.

Oldest image on Derpibooru, but what is the oldest Alicorn Twilight drawing on the internet?

She was certainly going to become a Princess all along; that had been the plan from the start, per Faust (she was being groomed to be Celestia’s successor).

Whether or not she was always going to be an alicorn, we don’t know, though we also know from Faust that she was planning on having her learn how to fly, so…
