@MrSeyker
Actually I was referring to when you see the castle in full normal animation when the Pillars are explaining what happened after they sent Stygian away, not what Sunburst was reading. We see Stygian return to the castle and a fight begins there.
I admit the castle is a good point of contention to my timeline.
As for the Journal I’m not sure if its still plausible canon (only have a general idea of its contents, having never read it).
I still cling to a coronation post Discord, though.
The way Celestia speaks about Discord in Season 2 strongly suggest as much to me, and the detail of when the castle was built is from an outside source (the inclusion of it in the flashback not particularly strong to me becauae it is a stylized retelling of what Sunburst read on the book).
@Starswirl
Also rather vague. Ponies seem to be rare outside Equestria, what are these other pony nations you speak of? Saddle Arabia seems to be horses, and do we know if Maretonia is considered part of Equestria or not? A number of parts of Equestria seem to have considerable autonomy (like the Crystal Empire), but Celestia and Luna are still considered the overall rulers of Equestria.
@Ryodraco
Keep in mind how Equestria is just one nation. There’s more than one pony nation around. Ruler of Equestria doesn’t have to mean ruler of all ponykind.
@MrSeyker
It was pretty vague in season 2 honestly, and later material like The Journal of the Two Sisters clarified that Celestia and Luna were named Equestria’s rulers by the founders of Equestria. Thus the implication is that at some point Discord arrived, took over, and Celestia and Luna had to go find the elements to regain Equestria and their position.
Plus we see the Castle of the Two Sisters in the flashback in this episode, and said castle was built after Celestia and Luna became Equestria’s rulers. This two parter just clarifies how they were still quite young at the time and mentored by Starswirl.
Pretty sure Discord and Sombra must be switched around.
The way Celestia spoke about Discord in season 2 heavily implies that Luna and her had no active involvement in pony society before they rose to stop him.
Which would mean ponies had no rulers and lived in harmony until Discord conquered them.
Then Celestia and Luna found the elements and rose to stop him, and became the rulers of pony kind after this event.
Sombra’s backstory has him show up with the princesses already ruling.
@Ryodraco
If that was anywhere, it would have been main series #5-8 (Nightmare Rarity); I’d have to go look as I honestly don’t remember. If they do say that, then it would definitely be contradicted by NMM’s FIENDship issue, where it’s clear that NMM Is the one who corrupts them into being the nightmare forces, rather than the other way around. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was partially a reaction to the fan backlash over the idea of NMM being corrupted externally.
But it seems, from this finale, that the writers are okay with external corrupting forces existing in Equestria. So even post-Faust, we may yet see more Faustian deals…
@Background Pony #7ACD
But didn’t an older comic say the nightmare forces were what created Nightmare Moon? Making this more recent story about the nyx rather contradictory? I’ve never followed the comics much, I just know they have gone more into detail with ideas about Nightmare Moon’s origin than the main series has. I also recall Faust supposedly said something about an evil magic effecting Luna and that her transformation was not entirely her own fault, but its hard to say if the series will ever make that canon.
@Ryodraco
This is like the third or fourth time this week that I’ve had to remind people that they undid that little problem in NMM’s FIENDship is Magic issue – observe how the Nyx begin as pastel dreamweavers and not scary grey nightmare forces:
@Hyliandragons
In the comics Luna was corrupted by an outside force that preyed on her bitterness and jealousy, but they’ve never specified if this applied in the series or not.
You know what’s strange? Ever since they defeated discord after using the elements, Luna becomes dark. Could this have something to do with the elements or was something simply awaiting for her and celestia and took the chance to get at her?
