I wonder if the staff at one point intended for the map to expand further west to another side of the planet through the “Undiscovered West”, but decided to retcon the concept sometime after this version of the map was released?
 
If this is a one faced world. Then wouldn’t it be apt if one could imagine their world straddling on a world tree, like Yggrasil or something?

The map seems to be constantly shifting in the series.  
I dunno when if ever we are going to get are final version of the map.

I think the continent is the Storm Realm. There are a lot more important changes than that. For instance, San Palomino is larger, further south, and merged with Bone Dry. Kludgetown, which hasn’t moved, is in the brown mountains near Somnambula. South Equestria is south of the Arimaspi territory and Kludgetown is on the edge of it - this is huge! (And South Equestria itself is also huge, easily twice the size of North Equestria.) Badlands are tiny and comparatively far north. The Macintosh Hills are massive, as tall as Mt Canterlot but thicker, and are in a cluster instead of forming a barrier, unless those are supposed to be those small things at the edge of Bone Dry. The Forbidden Jungle is smaller and is cordoned off by the mountains, restricted to the east coast.

The land bridge was always odd, in my opinion. The official maps have shown it since the first revision, but the cutie map never has – even the old version just had the islands.

I always liked to imagine that Celestia’s government was always extremely isolationist.  
It would explain why that despite being founded on the value of Friendship, they never offered any sort of assistance whatsoever to the Griffons that had been in anarchy for possibly centuries.  
Only bothered establishing relations with other countries after the 1000th Summer Sun.
 
Why they got surprise attacked by the Storm King’s Empire on their border despite him being responsible for “Conquering a dozen nations and destroying a dozen more”, I’ll never know.

That’s stupid, but stupid is not impossible. Leaders in real life can be REALLY dumb (remember Obama and Fast and Furious fiasco?).
 
What’s impossible is the idea that the two most powerful nations on the planet, in an era of trains, steamboat, airships, magical communication, and Ponified Las Vegas, have somehow never hear of each other until Tempest!
 
Especially if they share a border as you claim.

Storm King ruled all of the south. I dunno about the Dragon’s Lair and the Kirin Grove, those might be exceptions but are insignificant at this point.  
The lands north of Equestria which are now part of the Crystal (Equestrian vassal state) Empire were deserted before the CE’s reappearance after a thousand years of limbo. Yakyakistan was a remote closed off city state far north of the land of CE.  
And you have Griffonstone to the east which appears to be still free from the rules of outside powers. Though I imagine they are a client state to Equestria now.

This actually reminds of a post I saw on tumblr a while ago, someone doing an idle brainstorm of how they might design the world of a future MLP generation. I can’t seem to be able to track that post down anymore, which is a shame.
 
One idea they had was to have a bunch of different “breeds” or “types” of ponies living in different lands, each adapted slash thematically connected to their homes and each split between unicorns, earth ponies and pegasi, both for in-universe worldbuilding and variants in the toys (because let’s face it, merchandise has always been a major part of MLP).
 
For instance, you’d have the regular ponies in the usual semi-idyllic pastoral central setting (that generation’s version of Equestria/Ponyland), ponies from the mountains and/or far north with thicker, softer coats and tinsel in their manes, the crystal ponies again (with unicorns and more pegasi in this instance), night ponies (bat ponies, plus unicorn and earth pony versions) with possible bioluminescent bits living in the Everfree, etcetera.

I was only mentioning what was apparent in this map. If that was all we were talking about, that would be fair enough. I mean, it would still be a stretch, considering how big Equestria is, but it could work l.
 
The problem comes up when you take Season 8 and IDW into account, which frames both Equestria and the Storm King as the two global SUPERPOWERS. As in, global diplomacy only recently restarted because the Storm King had been defeated.
 
The Storm King wasn’t just the leader of a small band of marauders and air pirates. He was Emperor of a global Superpower. Yet neither global hegemon had ever heard of each other until Edge Waifu?

Something like not being a pony would have been mentioned in Mistmane’s backstory.
 
And would probably produce a few more differences than a curved horn.

I’m just wondering if the Kirins we’re going to be seeing in this show are going to be a entirely new race or just those Mistmane type unicorns.

The previous map had everything south of the hills as “Mysterious South” so I presume it’s not a part of Equestria, even if there is a train line that links to it.
