Fair enough, that does happen surprisingly often (sometimes to an alarming degree, like how Pinkie’s “Pinkamena” side seems to always be a serial killer instead of just agressively antisocial).
 
I did see one animation with Pinkamena ( https://derpibooru.org/1526998 ) where she’s basically a straight-haired Pinkie, but yeah, for the most part I see people give her traits she definitely didn’t have in canon…
 
 
That happens with characters who _do have established characterization too, though. Trixie and Maud come to mind, they were a pretty popular ship for a while up until Starlight got involved.
 
With characters with characterization, though, you can imagine what they’d be like, individually or together. With things like Comet Tail you kinda have to guess if it’s not a fic.
 
…Maud x Trixie is pretty out there, though.
 
Who do you ship them with?
I kinda do ship them together, sorry… Though I also think Flash Magnus would be a good match for her (DashMagnus hasn’t quite taken off, but I feel like it has potential).
 
Soarin’ I ship with Twilight… largely because of a fic I read ( https://www.fimfiction.net/story/1459/bechdels-law ) that had them being a couple in their school days. Though they aren’t a thing in the present day, I always loved the concept (the story was very well-written, I felt), and I kinda want to write a shipfic about them…
 
As for Rainbow Dash, I ship her with a certain OC. >.>; …I’m fairly amenable to canon x OC ships in general. I ship Applejack with Constance, for instance. Related to the point about background pony ships, I feel if you ship somepony with a background pony with little-to-no characterization, that background pony is functionally an OC, as their personality is of the writer’s invention.
 
As for canon x Rainbow ships, there aren’t a whole lot that really appeal to me, other than maybe QuibbleDash. DashMagnus actually does sound pretty good though, I feel like it’d work the best out of any pairing of a Mane character and their ancient counterparts (except for Fluttershy and her counterpart, perhaps).

I’m sure you’re right. From what we’ve learned of Soarin’ since his initial appearances, he’s generally a pretty good guy, and believes in fairness and justice (see: Rarity Investigates). He probably just lost control while making love to a mare he cares for very much, and he’ll probably feel terrible about it for a bit. But she’ll quickly forgive him, because he’s hard to hate, especially when he tries his best to make up for it. :3
 
And if she does wind up pregnant, I can’t help but think Soarin’ would make a good father.

I was just wondering about artist intent and all. While I cheerfully ignore artist intent and come up with my own, I like to know the original intent for comparison. You never known when an artist will go, “Let’s make this guy an asshole/rapist/whatever for fun…”

Soarin’ strikes me as a decent guy, I don’t think he’d do that kind of thing on purpose. (And if he does get her pregnant, I’m pretty sure he’ll take responsibility.)
 
As for the”background pony ships” thing, that’s basically what happened early on. Males didn’t tend to get a lot of characterization in the early part of the show, so I guess the fandom more or less worked with what they had, since it was either that or pair everypony with Big Mac. Hell, at least Soarin’ had “he’s a wonderbolt” going for him so the pairing had some justification.

I really don’t get background pony ships, and that’s what Soardash was for quite a while. Up until Rainbow Falls, the only things we knew about Soarin’ were that he was male, a Wonderbolt, and that he lied pies. Hardly enough to build a meaningful ship off of, and I’m pretty sure it only existed because some people wanted to pair Dash with a non-OC stallion. It’s gotten better in recent seasons, but for a while it was basically a background pony ship. Dashlane still is.
 
And don’t get me started on Twilight x Caramel or Comet Tail…
 
It’s not as bad with fanfiction, because the author can write out how it works and establish a personality for the BG pony (even if they’re functionally OCs at that point), but with art that has no description or context, it just puzzles me.
