To be honest, I always liked the concept of Griffins being portrayed as some sort parody of the Nazis, since they are canonically some sort of “master race” due of their “we can do everything you do because of fingers and opposable thumbs”, and flying.  
AND in since they apparently eat horses in mythology, they can consider themselves as a superior species.  
Also add the notorious hunger for money, that will eventually lead to hunger for power.
