People getting disintegrated by beams is kind of a trope in Japan and not limited to DBZ. If this was DBZ a cloud of smoke would appear on impact; and after it cleared he would be unscathed and the fight would continue another fifty episodes. Also if it was DBZ, the princesses would also be saying GRAAAAH! the whole time too.
