Background Pony Number 17
My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

The writers seem to have a rule about Spike: Whenever he deliberately sets out to do something, it usually fails in hilarious fashion. But when he’s confronted with a problem that isn’t related to the goal he’s set for himself, he ends up solving it effortlessly, often without even realizing it.

Spike is basically wei wu wei, “doing without doing”, the Tao of MLP.

@Armade
Not really. It had logic behind it as opposed to “lol spike is dumb”.

Dragons are dangerous and Ember, while Spike’s friend, is still very much a dragon used to her people. The stress of getting everything “just right” is no different than when the Yaks visited and Spike was really feeling it, the stress making him mimic Twilight in listing everything, but was so caught up in it all, he overlooked that he had Thorax come over the same day.

Thorax is more personal a friend to Spike, despite his royal status, so Spike wouldn’t have had stress with him normally, but Ember threw all that out the window with the possibility of a war starting up should toe two meet. He did a decent job keeping them apart, but that changed when the map said “Oy, Spike, friendship problem in ponyville you gotta fix”.

This was the map being a smartass again, much like with Starlight. When this was heaped onto the layers of problems Spike was dealing with, he left Twilight with Thorax and Starlight with Ember… Not having a clue they would SWITCH and take both of them out of the castle.

Spike, rather surprisingly, solves several friendship problems and initially tries to help Thorax, but this results in him going full terrified when Ember is seen outside while Spike is chatting with Thorax. Spike tries to get her to go somewhere else, and in her usual way, flattens him.

This triggers the event the map was counting on; Thorax jumps in to protect Spike, and, seeing the threat, Ember steps in to defend Spike and, when they both hear what eachother says, make a base connection that they both would fight to protect him. They initially are furious at him keeping them apart, but Thorax doesn’t go home and, due to the earlier connection, Ember stops to find out why he hasn’t left, resulting in their conversation where they find out what they are lacking and that, in a way, they have Spike to thank for it.

It wasn’t even much of a “spike” episode as it was a Thorax and Ember episode, which is good if they want to keep the roster expanding and be able to touch on new ideas.

In a roundabout way, he did. He caused the problem AND solved the problem by his accidental arranging of both of them showing up on the same day. He got the signal and tried to keep them apart, but that let both Ember and Thorax fully admit to themselves that they have issues in doing what they want to do with their respective people.

When they both ran into spike at the same time, they actually cemented a friendship by showing they would fight to defend him. This is why Ember met up with Thorax after they both left the town do discuss what was even going on.
