In the animated movie, it was Amazonian tradition for an ambassador to wear the colors of the other nation as a sigh of peace. Basically, she was wearing the colors of the US flag simply because she was GOING to the US. If she had been traveling to any other country, she would have worn their colors instead.

Because she was sent to help America fight off the nazis, and wore the costume as a symbol of it, if I’m not mistaken.  
And since DC is usually pretty big on iconography, it was kept like that for years.

I always thought that the Themyscaran (Noidea how to spell that) flag had red white and blue and it was just a coincidence.

last time I checked.. she was a amazon… a female warrior… that kind of amazonian… not the “Born in that forest” kind of amazonian… and she is a demi-god.. daughter of some god/goddess in greek mythology I think…
 
or maybe she just goes with what the fashion magazines tell her…
