The TMNT one is actually ironic, because the 2003 & 2012 TV reboots were actually more faithful to the original Mirage Studios TMNT comics, (even adapting some stories, and arcs like the Rat King’s original appearance, and the Fugitoid “lost in space” events) then the original cornball-classic show was.
There’s fans like that in every fandom. I even saw a “Zelda” fan bash the 3D games for not having a top down perspective like the original 2D games. Then, some bashed “Link Between Worlds,” and “Tri-force Heroes” for bringing back the original classic perspective.
You can’t please everyone.
Not just them. There’s also:
The genwunner Pokemon fans who believe everything after the first three games is garbage.
The Spider-Man fans who throw a temper tantrum every time a new animated series comes out because it’s not Spectacular Spider-Man.
The TMNT fans who throw a hissy fit whenever a new generation comes out because it’s “not faithful to the source material” or doesn’t change that much.
The Sonic fans who whine about the modern games not being as good as the classic games and then complaining about Sonic Mania being “too retro”.
The PlayStation fans who believe that the PS4 is a commercial failure just because it doesn’t have backwards compatibility (not even joking about that last part…).
Oh, and then there’s this little fact: that side of the fandom you mentioned would occasionally demonize the choices G4 made and claim that the show “needed to die so G5 could wipe the Slate clean”…. then when G5 WAS announced and certain details were revealed everyone immediately started complaining about how it was going to suck because they changed up the characters and “blacked” Applejack.
But yeah, bottom line, that section of the fandom is made up of nothing but immature, self-entitled, selfish children who can’t adapt to a changing fandom.
Because obviously you don’t have to like everything in order to be a fan of something but I think you should at least give things to benefit of the doubt and actually give it a chance.
it’s always a pain in the ass seeing people comment out I never going to watch the show again before I even see what they do with it.
I remember multiple times people saying that the only hope was a total retcon aka the lazy option
Don’t forget the terms “Hasdrones,” and so-called “true fans.” Ironically, those who call themselves “true fans” hate almost everything about the show after the first or second season. Kinda like the “True Sonic fans” that hate almost everything Sonic-related.
I mean, I can understand people prefering the older episodes/seasons, (and they’re not all bad folk) but I don’t get the “elitist” attitude some have with being like that. Especially, those that label those that still like the series as “mindless Hasdrones,” or assume others aren’t capable of criticising the show if they still like the newer seasons, and such.

Nowadays, people throw that term “Mary-Su” around so damn much it’s lost most of it’s original meaning, and basically now just means, “character I don’t wike!” That’s why I kinda hate the term.
The internet pretty much does not seem know what a Mary Sue is.
I believe the actual definition of a Mary Sue is a character who is Flawless however the internet turns to use a describe a character who was very powerful.
Personally I think the main issue with mirror magic was just a pasting it tries to do a bit too much in 22 minutes(pretty much the only time I agree with should have been a two parter type thing)

Not to mention before that, people used to hate on Twilight for “always stealing the spotlight” from the other characters in the main Pony show. Nowadays, it’s mostly Starlight accused of that, even after the show dialed back her role a bit in response. Still, Starlight seems to have just about as many fans as haters, so they can’t really get rid of her, or keep her without upsetting either side, as she’s still quite controversial.
(Ironically, I remember when Twilight became an alicorn, some fans stated they think they should add a new unicorn character to balance out the “Mane 6.” The fanbase is rather fickle.)
Sunset actually used to get some hate herself before she even first appeared, (except in previews/commercials/merch’) but ever sense “Rainbow Rocks” most everyone loves her now further showing how fickle fans are.
I think the only reason Sunset gets away with getting more spotlight in EqG is because she’s an EqG exclusive character, and that series doesn’t get as many episodes as the main show. Therefore, most don’t feel that “overexposed” to her, or have her “shoved in their face” like with Starlight, or even Twilight. Still, she gets plenty of “movies.” So she still gets plenty of spotlight in EqG, even more then any of the main 6, so a few argue she’s a bit of spotlight stealer herself. (Some argue that’s “fine,” because the Mane 6 get spotlight in the main MLP:FiM show, but still, I’d like to see what the human versions are like, as well.)
No offense, but Sunset and Starlight both have kinda bland/typical personalities, but regardless I admit they both have their cute/funny/amusing moments. I know most fans hated the half hour special episode where they met, (especially sense some felt Starlight took Sunset’s glory) but I actually enjoyed it, and they both have interesting (platonic) chemistry together. When you have somebody as awkward & ridged as Starlight with somebody who’s a bit more confident, yet sometimes just as awkward as Sunset, they make an interesting team.
It’s a shame many fans hated the “crossover.”

That could be said for many other characters. Fluttershy fans, and Spike fans in particular used to be stereotyped as “annoyingly overly protective” in the fanbase. (Didn’t help a few Spike fans were actually hassling show staff, accusing them of “hating/abusing” him if Spike so much as trips comically in an episode, and one notorious creepy one kept making hate-art of Spike getting “revenge” on the show staff.)
Luckily, that’s died down a bit.

Yeah, they don’t usually sync the comic canon with the show, it wasn’t until recently they finally admitted they’re slightly different canons.
You might be being a li’l hard on Sunset, (and her fans) but I suppose you have some points.
As I said, I remember Sunset used to be just as hated as Starlight, and such were before her reformation. I even used to stick up for her, and EqG, (stating maybe we should give it a chance) and catch hell for it. Nowadays, if I criticise EqG, or Sunset at all, I get accused of being a “hater,” or something. One even tried to accuse me of being a “Starlight fanboy,” (I really hate this “if you like one, you must be a hater of the other” attitude, reminds me of the “Amy VS Sally” arguments in the Sonic fanbase) but ironically I used to dislike Starlight. (Later I got over it.)
I hate to sound biased, but I suppose it is kinda odd fans tend to love Sunset for the same reason/s they hate characters like Starlight. I even think it’s kinda overboard the series is suddenly giving Sunset tons of hobbies, especially video gaming all of sudden in order to make her more appealing.
I hate the term “Mary-Su,” but I find it ironic many who accuse certain characters of being one tend to like a character that has some “Su” traits themselves. Sunset, Starlight, and even Twilight ALL have “Su” traits when you think about it, but that doesn’t make ’em bad characters. They still have flaws, and likeable traits, as well.

the funny thing in a way sunset pretty much stole Twilight’s spotlight in friendship games that was pretty much when she became the lead character
in fairness I have seen some Starlight fans act the same way
that said, however, I wouldn’t mind if she had remained evil and got away with her dastardly deeds.
oh, and one more thing, I would not really consider being ostracized and called out on one’s actions suffering or punishment. remember, Sunset was only punished for sabotaging Twilight’s Fall Formal victory on the night of the event. that, and turning everyone in CHS (sans Twi and the Main Five) into mindless meat puppets and unsuccessfully committing regicide.
and what’s worse is many of these fans are her ex-haters, which makes it all the more ludicrous (and pathetic). that already makes ‘em hypocritical enough as it is! and you’d think they’d pipe down, be accepting of other fans’ perspectives (no matter how strongly they disagree with them), and be happy with what they got. but no, they have to rain on everyone else’s parade and sling mud at any poor sucker unfortunate enough to cross their path. and they expect others to respect their opinions? HELL NO. not with that attitude!

The problem is the fact that this entire story takes place after the Dazzlings were defeated, as in after she’s long since earned her redemption, which is why this is not only unnecessarily spiteful.
It would be one thing if this took place sometime after the first movie, showing that the effects of her attitude still lingered, but literally after she helps save the world?
The timing of such an incident was very very poor.
You might have a point, even if it wasn’t handled well in the comic. (Kinda made the CMC look bad, and keep in mind this is the only time the CMC played any kind of role in the EqG series, so it’s understandable why many didn’t like the comic issue.)
Sunset was portrayed so sympathetic in “Rainbow Rocks,” and in fanworks that many forget how awful she was in the original movie. (Including breaking up the Mane 5’s friendships for no real reason, trying to frame Twilight, just using Flash, and such.) I think they had her suffer a bit in order to help cement her heel face turn, though some felt she “suffered enough” in the R.R. movie.
Ironically, many Sunset fans hate characters like Starlight for not being punished severely for their crimes. (Though, many see Starlight’s as worse, considering she almost unintentionally destroyed the timeline, and such, and like Sunset also had a rushed reformation.) So Starlight kinda has the opposite problem Sunset has, in that many don’t find her as sympathetic, or “suffered enough” to deserve their respect. (Though, it was kinda handled more subtly then Sunset, and spread throughout a season or two, while Sunset had a whole movie to rap up her issues.)
Though, not trying to start a “Sunset VS Starlight” debate, I’m just pointing out the similarities they have, and similar yet different problems they have.

wow. just… WOW. if that doesn’t scream hypocrisy…
so, her fans didn’t care that she was once cruel to others, but when others are cruel to her, they lose their heads.
I get that Anderson gave the CMC a flimsy excuse for why they made Shimmer suffer, but that is not reason for anyone to lash out on the Crusaders.
