She’s younger, but not really smaller. She still seems to be bigger than Starswirl in the few instances we see them together, so she likely wouldn’t have physically grown enough for him to notice. The comics portrayed Celestia having a romantic relationship with good Sombra, who seemed to be roughly her age, even though the main universe Sombra is still fairly young when he first battles a fully grown Celestia. This suggests either this is one of those other comic breaks or Celestia is older than Sombra by a few years.

The comics where Celestia has a romance with an alternate universe Sombra would be way out of chronological order, because in today’s episodes Starswirl implies he hadn’t seen Celestia since she was younger (he particularly notes how tall she is), and yet when Celestia is using the mirror to see Sombra, she is fully grown and Starswirl is not in Limbo.
 
Odds are what happened was the Legends of Magic series was a collaborative effort between the writers of the show and the comics, or as I said before, the comics were simply using characters the writers had already devised. To assume these issues makes the comics canon is basically assuming that the writers of the comics created the characters to begin with.

For some people it’s not enough to just ignore them.
 
They must continually remind everyone that they hate them. To them, saying “this thing contradicts something in the show” justifies disregarding them entirely. Never mind the fact that the show itself frequently contradicts and retcons itself.

The comics can’t be canon. Even after they put a tighter hold on them they still managed to mess it up.

Well technically, it doesn’t. This episode was probably written a good while before the comics were made, and seeing as the writers for both the comics and the shows keep in touch with each other (the comic writers have to make sure they don’t accidentally do the same thing they do in the show) the odds are they decided to do those comics to overlap with this particular episode.
 
Of course, it might also be the other way around and the writers wanted to give a shout out to the comics.
 
Either way, the comics contradict the show in some points too, such as Luna becoming Nightmare Moon by being possessed by evil spirits in the comics, while in the show she only ever suggests that she was changed by her own jealousy.

That’s not even a difference. That’s just Price trying to trumpet up his mediocre work. Even if the comics weren’t terribly written most of the time (and contradicted by show almost all the time) they wouldn’t be canon because most of the scripts are written by hacks lazily copy-pasting their old non-pony work into MLP causing most of characters to act wildly out of character or having such manure as Twilight making Holocaust joke in the very first comic…

I like the idea of another series that has actual oversight to keep it from being total crap but I can’t accept the loss of friends forever to do it. The oversight will likely not last for more then a few issues anyway.
