I don’t think it matters why the died, and I think you just answered your own question as to when.
As for why the writers would do this, because they felt like it, duh.
Anyway, what’s the alternative? Have they been on a cruise for the last sixteen years? At this point, them being dead is more likely than them being alive.
On a side note, it’s funny that the admins haven’t yet enforced the “only pic related discussions” rule. It’s as if they only do that when things get too “political.”

I think there’s overwhelming evidence in the characters’ dualogue.
Burnt Oak says, “It’s nice to remember him,” implying that their father in some way gone and never coming back.
Talking about it makes Big Mac and Burnt Oak cry.
Applejack says, “If Mom and Dad we’re here,” while crying.
And who said they don’t remember their parents? The reason they weren’t brought up until season 5 is because the writers couldn’t get away with it until then.
well but they would never state that within the shows canon.
and i don’t see why they would actually be dead, other than the fact that they pretty much left all their kids behind, but then again… how old is applebloom? and compared to applejack and big mac they should still remember their parents if they were still around while applebloom was born.
or am i missunderstanding how birth works.
