Disowned is exaggeration at best, willful misinterpretation more accurately.
It’s more of a Cat’s in the Cradle situation, where they prioritized career over living together, and she grew up to do the same.
Her family left her so that she wouldn’t get EATEN by a dangerous animal, then when she was old enough, they came to take her with them. She disowned THEM at this point and they just… swallowed that fact and left.

I really wonder how they are going to handle AJ’s parents. I mean, will they specifically state that they are dead?
This seems to be the best way to write it.
Heck, over the last two seasons, we got a massive exposition on Derpy’s past with this episode being a super critical one.
Most likely, we’ll see Scootaloo hanging around Dash’s parents a lot, implying what the writers don’t want to come out and say directly.
